68 Console Radio
« on: May 05, 2011, 10:02:36 PM »
Dad dumped the original radio in my 68 years ago for an aftermarket unit.  I want to get a correct replacement.  What is the correct number?  Is it 8TPZ.  Just an AM radio with the padded 68 console.  Also, does anyone have a picture of the correct knobs?  MY 67 radio fits the console, but the knobs obviously are not long enough to clear the pad.

That looks like the right number. No difference in the radio. The knobs are deeper for the console. West coast Cougar has good console reproductions for about $40.  Marty

I just got the knobs from West Coast Cougar the other day...they look great.  Just need to get a 68 radio now.  Thanks,

Dave

Radios not hard to find on eBay. Expect to pay anywhere from 25 to 125 for a AM unit. The higher priced ones should get you a very nice unit with excellent case with stamp and tape, no cut wiring, nice face plate and working. The console units did have special knobs but also there is a white cone insert on the rh stem. Not sure what it does but should be there. Lucky your not looking for an AM/FM as a reconditioned unit recently sold for 575. Heard a 67 even more expensive.

I see that AM radios are plentiful on Ebay.  I'm going to borow the white cone off my 67 radio.  If you do not have a fader control on the radio, it keeps the rh outer knob from turning as well as keeping is spaced out properly.

There seems to be one on there from Fastbackstack classics in Kent washington which has uncut wiring. You would need to replace the faceplate as its cracked at both corners but the tin on the case looks nice. Might want to send it out to be rebuilt/tested. You can also ask this guy to add an MP3 connection and you can use an iPod for music. Not the cheapest one ive seen but case looked very nice for the money. The original knobs for a console car are ridiculously priced.

I picked up a radio on ebay for $19.95 + $10 freight.  I got real lucky.  The wires were uncut and it worked!  I cleaned up the face, poliched the buttons, painted the pointer and repainted the silver strip across the face.  Turned out great   8)

That was a good buy for a working unit without cut wires.
