67-68 Rocker Panel Molding Kit 10146
« on: October 12, 2024, 08:18:02 AM »
This C8ZZ-6510146-A Rocker Panel Moulding "Kit" currently listed on FB Marketplace caught my eye because of the C8 prefix, so I did some digging into the Parts & Accessories and Obsolete.Supersede.Interchange catalogs.  My observations:

1. As of the 1960-68 catalog, change number 28, dated April 1968, the C8ZZ-6510146-A kit was not listed.  In fact, there are no basic part number 10146 items listed.
2. Similarly, the 1965-72 catalog (dated 1975) does not list the C8ZZ-6510146-A kit either.  However, there is a single listing under basic part number 10146, but for the Pinto (L).
3. There is no record of the kit nor the individual left & right moldings (C7ZZ-6510176-A / C7ZZ-6510177-A) with attaching parts in the 1979 version of the Obsolete.Supersede.Interchange catalog.
4. Both MPCs list the individual left & right moldings (with C7ZZ prefix) as viable service parts.

I have to wonder when this kit was developed, whether in 1968 based on the C8 prefix, or much later to serve the blossoming Mustang restoration community.  I also have to wonder what catalog this would have appeared in.

John : I believe that I have solved this ?Mystery?.

We know that in 1967, the Rocker Panel Moldings were only available in Special Packages (like the Sprint Package) or as a separate stand alone Factory Option. For 1968, all Models, at least initially, came with Rocker Panel Moldings. The Rocker Panel Moldings were not offered either year as an Accessory Kit. So, if your 67 did not come with Rocker Panel Moldings from the Factory, one had to order both a right hand (C7ZZ-10176-A), and a left hand (C7ZZ-10177-A) Rocker Panel Molding ; luckily, both came with ?Attaching Parts?.

Ford must have thought that a lot of these were ordered in 1967 (more than just for replacements due t damage), and in late 1968, decided to offer a Kit for 1969. As this was designed (put together) in 1968, it, like many 1965-67 Accessories, carried a Part Number that reflected the year before an Accessory was actually introduced/ available.
Sure enough, the 1969 Accessory Catalog shows the C8ZZ-10146-A Kit (copies from 1968 Ford Accessory Catalog attached). Being in the 1969 Accessory Catalog, one must figure that this Kit is for 1969?s, not any other year. No Accessory Rocker Panel Moldeing Kit is shown in the 1970 Ford Accessory Catalog. Each the 1969 and 1970 Rocker Panel Moldings were unique to that year (C9ZZ, and D0ZZ, respectively).

As for the C8ZZ-10146-A appearing in an OSI Catalog, I went a little further than just your 1976 OSI. I looked in my 1967,68,69,70,71,72,74,76,77,79 and 814 OSI Catalogs ; no C8ZZ-10146-A is shown.

Not a real surprise as, over the years, I have found three different things appear when searching for an ?NR? (obsoleted) Part. Sometimes it?s never listed ; sometimes it?s only listed once, never to appear again ; and sometimes it?s listed each year for a 10 year period. Of course, I don?t have all of the OSI?s that were printed during the periods I listed, as some years, there were as many as 5 issues printed during the year.

Hope this helps,

Bob

At some point I had a set of these. They came with instructions that showed how to install them on a 69.

Marty[/u] : Attached is a copy of the "half" of the Instruction Sheet you Posted in 2016, during the 6 page discussion we had on 1967-68 Rocker Panel Moldings. Could you Post a copy of the other half so I (we) can have the complete Instructon Sheet ?
Also, do you know for a fact that it came from a C8ZZ-6510146-A Kit like the one John Posted here ?

John
: Could you contact that FB "Poster" and see if that Kit comes wit Instructions ? If so, either get a copy of same, or at least the I.S. #.

It just seems odd that Ford would offer a Kit containing 1967-68 Rocker Panel Moldings in 1969, for 1969's, when the C9ZZ Rocker Panel Moldings were available.
Although, looking at the width and placement of the 1969 moldings, it appears obvious that they were really just for looks, and not for protectting the Rocker Panel.

Maybe Ford thought that, and offered the 1967-68 molding to replace, and better protect the 1969 Rocker Panels ?

Bob,

Thanks for the previous post, that did clarify and answer my questions.

As far as the FB item, that was sold, but I've contacted the seller to see if I can get a copy of the I.S.

Marty : Thanks ! Yes, that sure shows replacing the 1969 Rocker Panel Moldings with 1967-68's.

Weird.

Weird.
Weird - no. You have to remember that Ford did not assemble "concourse grade vehicles" -  on any of their assembly lines - and definitely DID NOT service them at dealerships as concourse grade. We, the members of this forum, "try" to recreate what ENGINEERING designed, and in many instances what the ASSEMBLY LINE DID (as approved engineering changes) to our cars. That's why you will find 67-68 items used as replacements on other years.
