200 CID 6-cyl engine / compartment photographs
« on: October 21, 2024, 08:50:04 PM »
Hi everyone.

I'm enclosing a few photos of our engine / compartment.  They are for your general use.  There are a few things that aren't exactly correct...I know what most of those are.  Not looking for criticism but simply to share photos for anyone who could use them for research or reference.

Thanks!

Would you like to point out the things that are not correct so that others looking at the pictures don't copy those details?   Sure you don't want that since your posting them for reference and research  ;)

For others looking for 68 6 cylinders also consider looking at the unrestored examples in the Unrestored Picture section on this site located on the main page just above the club discussions and just below the last Mustang (by year) sections

Jeff:  Thanks very much for your thoughts.

I agree that it would be a good idea to list the items that could be corrected in the engine compartment...some of those you noted in earlier posts and questions I had.

For everyone's benefit, the nuts and bolts on the shock tower, the shock absorber and the shock tower support frame that attaches to the firewall - are currently all gloss black (painted that way when we had our car's body and paint work completed).  The gloss black certainly looks good...probably the reason we have kept the gloss black paint.  Those nuts and bolts, if I am not mistaken, should be phosphate and oil (similar to the long battery hold down nuts and bolts in the picture).

Some believe the shock tower cap should also be phosphate and oil.  Previous input from the Forum indicated there were multiple suppliers for this part servicing the Metuchen Plant in 1968.  We have documentation that some suppliers used gloss black, some suppliers used phosphate and oil.  So...in our cases, the gloss black is correct.

I hope the above is helpful.  Jeff...thanks again.

I saw a few other things that were not mentioned. The threaded portion of the upper shock bracket was phosphate and oil but the flange nuts were zinc silver same with the shock hold down bolts. The nut used on the battery hold down has a spinning washer and not a flange nut. The negative battery cable would be tinned or silver in appearance. The fan spacer would be bare aluminum/diecast. The valve cover breather cap with the small dimple at the top center is a later service replacement style. The distributor has a later style service replacement vacuum advance pod. Coil bracket would be phosphate and oil along and the coil terminal end would be slide more then half of the body past the hold down bracket. The coil was ink stamped so no decal or sticker was used and the hold down bolt was zinc silver. Ford used a plastic clip to hold the sparkplug wires and not the small black zip ties. The accelerator arm mounted to the firewall was phosphate and oil. The firewall is missing sealer/deadener used to seal items coming through the firewall like heater hoses and heater motor, wiring, master cylinder etc. The heater motor is a replacement style different then assemblyline. The black convoluted tubing holding the wire harness was not used and is aftermarket. Not being versed in 6 cylinders much that is all I saw. Maybe others saw more.

Bob:  Thanks for the details...and I thought I was close to being done!  HAH!

I'd like to pursue a little more about the nuts / bolts with the shock tower, shock attachment and brace connection at the firewall (I did review several posts throughout the forum and either MISSED the posts I'm looking for or couldn't find them).  What are the make up / color for:
1.  The shock tower support bracket attached at the firewall (bolts and nuts);
2.  Top attachment of the shock absorber to the shock tower cap (bolts and nuts); and
3.  Attachment of the shock tower cap to the shock tower / shock tower support bracket (bolts and nuts).

I see your response "the threaded portion of the upper shock bracket was phosphate and oil but the flange nuts were zinc silver same with the shock hold down bolts)...and I appreciate those details.  I'm also fairly certain I understand what you're describing.  But...I'm simply trying to get all of the related answers together so I can tackle the entire job properly, and being specific with the three items above helps make it clearer for me (not trying to waste your time).

Have you looked in this forum's library? There is a topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheets, 67-68" that has two files, one by application (use) the other by part number. They use a combination of the actual Mustang assembly line drawings and Ford Car Parts, the service documents used by dealers, as sources to define the hardware. I would also strongly recommend that you get a set of Mustang Assembly manuals for your year car. The paper version is easier to mark up with notes than the one on disc.

1. Zinc Dichromate
2. Only bolts since the nut or thread end are part of the front upper shock mounts Xinc
3. Bolts are dark hardened steel nuts with zinc nuts

Hope I understood you correctly  :)

Examples of these details _ think are also shown in some of the unrestored examples in that section of the site.  ;)

1.-bolts are zinc dichromate gold. Nuts underneath P/O.AMK/NPD sells. 2. Shock absorber to shock tower cap bolts (there are no nuts because it is made into cap) silver .AMK/NPD sells. 3. Thread studs/Bolts are P/O and nuts are zinc silver flange nuts. I just realized Jeff already answered your question however I at least was able to tell you where to get them if you so desire.

Jim and Jeff:

Thanks very much for your responses.

Jim...I saw reference to the "spreadsheets" in other posts, but never knew where they were (even though there is a "Library" entry...you would think I would have caught on...Library, resources, Library, resources...).  Great information and thanks for pointing it out.  I have copies of the Assembly Manuals.  I can start cross referencing items now that I know about the spreadsheet.

Jeff...Great help with the "nut and bolt" question / shock tower and bracket.  EXACTLY what I am looking for.  And the PICTURES are an immense help.

Hi Bob!

This is "Christmas" in October.  Thanks for your note and source information.  I have the new NPD manual.  Tomorrow's opportunity.
