Trouble finding lt blue dash color 1968
« on: July 18, 2011, 08:56:38 PM »
I'm having the dangest time finding the light blue color for my 68 coupe.

Goes on dash, kicks, qtrs, doors.

This is a dual-blue interior like this:
http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/1967-1968-ford-mustang-14.jpg

I bought the AP5748 from NPD and it's gray with hardly any blue in it.  Sent it back.

I tried an old can of 5748 from a friend and it is bluer.

Paint shop said old colors were lacquer with a flattener and the old formulas don't work with the new chemistries, so they tried to match a piece I had but the sheen came out too flat.
5 cans at $30 = fail.

Anyone got a simple solution, maybe I'm somehow making this harder than it's suppose to be.

You'll have to get somebody who knows what they are doing to match the proper color blue and make the actual dye for the dash pad. They can then spray it the proper color.

I don't think the reproduction dash pads accept dye very well, might need an original dash pad too.

Kick Panels are molded plastic but I've heard of people painting them.

Talking the metal dash here, not the dash pad.  Sorry for the confusion.

Today I ordered the KR14 spray cans from VCM which they get from Scott Drake.

Roger just so you know the kick panels were molded in that color and not painted. I have an original blue 68 kick panel which I believe is an assembly line part. I don't think any spray can paint will hold up very well on the plastic trim unlless this will be a car that is for static display only. Go to a good automotive paint store and they can custom mix a color which is darn close especially made for interior trim. It should have some flex agent in it, flattener and hardner. The place I buy from can even make it an aerosol if you dont have the equipment to shoot with a gun. Saw a guy buy a spray can last week and he was paying premium because it was yellow. I think the can was like $30. But it matched the car this guy was working on. I'd send you a pic of the kick panel but you really cant work off a pic for color matching. Now for the dash I can't make any recommendation as i dont think I have any blue metal pieces.

For the kicks, I'm going to try the bulldog adheasion promoter.

I had the local paint shop mix me up 5 spray cans of a custom light blue matched to my steering column.  They added way too much flatterer.  I doubt I can get my $150 back.  Tried using several types of clear and no luck.

For the A-pillar pads and steering pad what should I use?

Just got in a batch of Scott Drake L5748 Light Blue Metallic from VA Classics. Same silver color. Not anywhere close to light blue of the upholstery, head liner, kicks or even another light blue car.

I'm open to suggestions because I'm stopped on restoration until I can get the dash painted.
