Air cleaner base for 70 R code
« on: July 02, 2024, 12:12:09 AM »
I am looking for an air cleaner base for my 70 R code. When I look online, all of the ones that I can find are either for a Q code, or a 1969 R code (with metal pcv elbow). Is there anywhere that I can get one for a 70 R code air cleaner base?

You can buy a air cleaner from another application with the same elbow, remove it and add it to the base needing repair or as some people do, faking an original

I have seen the plastic elbow for sale. Does it mount in the same place as the metal one?

Hi Dave, Just FYI, The 1970 428 air cleaner base is a different stamping than the 1969 "R" code base. There are other bases that can be converted with some work to a very convincing 69 base (1967 Thunderbird)  but nothing common that I'm aware of that you can use to "make" a 1970 base that's even close to concours correct. Aside from the elbow changing from steel to plastic, the 70 bases have a large area stamped into the base for additional clearance around the throttle cable/kickdown rod area. If your not concerned about correctness, a 69 "R" code base or a converted Thunderbird base will work. Real 1970 "R" code bases or shakers turn up occasionally, If you come asross a decent one, I'd highly recommend biting the bullet and buying it..... Check out the air cleaner section here to see the difference. Hope this helps, John
