A/C vent color
« on: July 10, 2024, 10:18:32 PM »
Okay I did a search and found a few bits of info but I'm going to ask a question. I know that the lower metal dash is painted the dark charcoal metallic however I'm in the process of refurbing some of the A/C vents and upon inspection I can't find any evidence of them ever being dark charcoal metallic. Mine are just a semi-flat blackish gray looking color with no metallic and I'm 99 percent sure they've never been repainted. I'd like to repaint them but just not sure which way to go. Has anyone else noticed this on the A/C vents? Thoughts?

I am not sure which plant, year or trim you have, but all the ones I have seen are vacuum metalized. As for the paint/ textured section I am not sure. There are a bunch of photos in the unrestored section here. Eg

Dark Charcoal Metallic. Like the original black was was used for Mach I hoods and Boss 302 the color goes on with a blue tint and builds to a strong black

The vent bezels I have pictured don?t show any evidence of dark charcoal metallic and nor do they show any evidence of ever being repainted. That?s what confuses me.

Sorry should have been clearer and more correct in my first response.

What does the back side show?

There is the possibility that these were made by the same provider as the gauge surrounds and got the same coating. As discussed in another thread you can see the blue tint to the paint I referred to above on the side of the example below. As mentioned this built up to a pretty flat black similar to the process for the exterior black out areas on a Mach and Boss

Sorry I don't have a vent to compare in person
