I found detailed information on 9 inch axle pinion snubbers done by Anghel Restorations.

Our thanks to Anghel restorations for the research done on this. With the various designs that evolved I am wondering if the bracket was getting bent or damaged in use.
Ford Product Development determined that pinion snubbers were needed when an axle and driveshaft went into full jounce to minimize the sharp jolt (thump) a customer would experience and to prevent the driveshaft from hitting the tunnel and damaging it. On a new car design or an increase in driveshaft diameter we had to do a vehicle test for clearance. To worst case the test we would remove the rubber bumper and put 400 lbs in the trunk and then use the test track to achieve full jounce

1968 CJ - Owner and paint original. Dec 67 build in Dearborn. One of 50 135 Cobra Jets. Ford engineering used it for 8 mos. to resolve problems in the 50 early car build. Ford by-passed the normal sign off to get cars to the Winternationals drag race.

Yes nice work and thanks for the insight. Hard to believe that almost ten years has passed since it was posted. BTW the article is also posted in the Library section of this site with Marcus' permission  ;)

So here's a question actually two about my 69 9"; I have a pinion snubber in the floor not on the pinion and I don't know how to read the ' i ' with two dots below.  Little help ? Brian

The two dots signify the second decade of production. Ford did not use the "I" because they did not want anyone to confuse it with a "1" which means that part was cast in 1971.
1968 W code 427 Cougar XR-7 GTE Feb 23 Dearborn C6 / 3.50 open
1968 R code 428CJ Cougar XR-7 May 13 Dearborn C6 / 3.91 T - Lock
