1967 GTA 390 - 12 Slot wheels - Factory or not
« on: January 13, 2024, 12:52:39 AM »
Hi all, when I bought my 67 390 GTA Coupe it came with 'Fomoco' stamped 12 slot chrome wheels with push on dress ring and GT hub caps.  I was told that some 67 Mustangs had genuine factory 12 slot wheels.  Is this correct?  I didnt think the 12 slots were factory at all but I am assured they are and that they are not common.

thanks

Would your Marti report have the specific wheels listed?

Is your car a GT?

The only factory optioned wheels for your 67 GTA were Styled Steel wheels. The wheels you have were used on the 68 and 69 GTs.

No those are not factory wheels for 67. Some one gave you bad advice

Also not part of your GTA package

Thanks guys for the update.  Mine is a Factory GTA with a lot of GT features.  Given that the 68-69 used 12 slot chrome Fomoco stamped wheels, I assume they are sought after?

thanks

Thanks guys for the update.  Mine is a Factory GTA with a lot of GT features.
All factory correct Mustangs that came equipped with the GT Equipment Group option, regardless of transmission type, should have "all of" not "a lot of" GT features.   It is a finite list.

The list of GT Equipment Group features does not include these items:

1. Styled Steel Wheels, sometimes incorrectly referred to as "GT Wheels", and available on any V8 equipped Mustang.
2. Vented hood, often misnamed the "GT Hood", which was part of the Exterior Decor Group option (for 1967), and available on any Mustang.

There are other misconceptions, but those are the two most common that come to mind.

What also confuses some is when they see a 390 GT equipped Mustang that does not have the GT Equipment Group option.  Ford named this particular 390 S-Code engine the "390 GT" engine.  In this case, the "GT" designation of the engine has nothing to do with the GT Equipment Group.   Of course, cars could have been factory ordered with both.

A base car ordered with the 390 GT engine option, and nothing else except what might be required to get the 390, does not make the car a GT.

You may know all of this already, but since there is ample confusion out there, someone down the road might read this and learn something.

Well said John.

I think some of the wheel confusion comes from that in 68 the styled steel wheel was part of the GT option. Although it was the argent painted version of that wheel.

Thankyou for the information.  Looking at my Marti Report mine has, GT Equipment Group, Exterior/Interior Group and Tachometer & Odometer options as well as the other options, power steering, deluxe steering wheel, rocker panel moldings, tinted glass etc.

As you mentioned the GT equipment Group is the identifier that makes it a GT.  So Looks like I have the Factory GT.

Cheers

That will be a very nice car when you are finished.
