Pinch Weld Blackout behind the rear wheel
« on: December 18, 2023, 05:11:57 PM »
1970 Dearborn Mach 1
I know the pinch weld got painted but how far up got painted? Did black-out paint completely cover the lower flange (approx. 1") that connects to the start of the lower outer quarter skin? Did the paint extend to the quarter skin? This is the part that is horizontal to the ground. I looked and I could not find any pictures looking up from the bottom to verify. Thanks

Yes Ford wanted and most cars got the pinchweld blacked out from the front edge of the rocker panel all the way to the rear valance. How far up the body and how much paint went on the floors and brackets/panels that hung down depended on the angle of the gun and pressure.  Never have been able to find out if these were done by hand or by propositioned spray jets the body passed over.

You didn't include when your car was constructed so can't provide any examples that might be close but here are a few focusing on the section between the rear of the rear wheel well and valance I hope will help. Also remember that the spray started before the rear edge so black paint in a somewhat narrow pattern would have been sprayed so it would go over the body color sound deadener in the rear wheel well just forward of the quarter panel pinch weld

Seems not allot of use take pictures of this area and often the paint is chipped, removed or touch ups/repairs have covered some or all

Here is a 70 example showing some of the paint remaining and a couple of shots of how high it was applied to the rockers 0F1318xxx

And a close up of a 69 Dearborn example of that area. I would paint up and break the paint edge somewhere on the horizontal surface of the quarter panel  Hope this helps
