« on: June 27, 2019, 02:38:23 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone has a clear recommendation regarding a convertible top (and material) supplier?

Experiences?

Looking to buy one for my car, pinpoint vinyl w. glass.

Many thanks.

As a generic supplier, Tops Online.com is pretty decent. One company owns Robbins and Ez-on.  I have noticed they have switched materials for covering the rear bow. For the Foxbody, it was plastic with a plastic insert/ cover.  The new ones are coming with folded fabric.

First, find a convertible top installer shop. Discuss all of your concerns and objectives with them. Shops are not all the same.

I'll could do, Jim, but doubt if they give me clear feedback due to the fact that the top will be installed in GER, finally.

Ralf,
I forgot where you were, but that makes it even more critical - you are putting a top on a 50 year old car. Who ever does the installation may not be 50 years old. Talk to the installer first. Work with him.

Either Robbins or Kee.  I worked with Kee about 10 years ago to have them run a custom pattern with the correct stitching and brass zipper rear window.

 Ralf:
This is my post from 2015 when I was looking for the most correct top for my car. I decided on ARO. One more thing to add is that the last bow with the plastic cover needs to be a certain length.  I was lucky in that a judge at one of the shows showed me the correct and a few incorrect lengths on the cars there. The incorrect ones were all too short. The assembly manual has the correct length; I don't want to put a number out there from my memory. But if you have an assembly manual you can check.  If not, perhaps someone will chime in. Lastly the installer is most important.  A bad installer can make any top look bad.  I suggest you investigate the installers that do MB or BMW tops.  They may be expensive but they probably have a critical clientele so they need to do good work.  Good Luck.

"Just to make sure I have the bases covered, am I correct in saying that the proper convertible top should have the following characteristics:

Haartz pinpoint vinyl is the top material
The binding and the front windroll should be crushed grain vinyl and not pinpoint
For a white Top, the "Ford White" should be specified as it is different than the industry "white"
Is "Singletex" or "Doubletex" more correct?

The zipper must be brass and it should open from the driver's side
The zipper should have a leather tang attached to it
Sometime in the 1965 MY a snap & strap were added  This aided in holding the rear curtain up in the center to make zipping and unzipping easier. The rear bow has a hole for the snap and the rear curtain has the strap. Do we have an approximate date that this change was made?

On the bow just prior to the rear curtain, a 2-piece soft plastic cover that folds over is needed to hide the staples. NPD sells the correct piece.
There is a chrome arrow at the end of this plastic piece. Some have a rounded end and others a sharper point. When was the change-over date?

I saw no postings for any supplier that makes a correct date coded rear plastic window.  Does anyone make a Concours correct rear plastic window?

Is there anything else to consider before purchasing a convertible top?

Which of the suppliers comes closest to a concours correct top as describes above if I have the facts in order?
ARO
Kee
Robbins
Electron
EZ-ON"

The Robbins top I bought about 2 years ago did not come with the plastic tack strip cove. While it was for my 89, it should have been the similar to the early cars. They are using a fabric folded piece.

NPD sells the strip in either white/black last time I checked.

Either Robbins or Kee.  I worked with Kee about 10 years ago to have them run a custom pattern with the correct stitching and brass zipper rear window.

Hi Charles, I am 98% sure that they put a Kee top on mine (this would have been in 2008) I remember the talk about the extra stitching being done.
My top is absolutely beautiful to this day and has never been down! I get complements all the time as to how nice and tight it looks!
I know they spec'd a brass zipper and an UN-branded vinyl window but I'm unsure as to IF mine has the extra stitching that you were working with.
I really don't know what to look for.....would you happen to have a picture or 2 to show this stitching?  (Thanks!)

Just to come back here and not to open another one....

On the folding glass there are two different types of silicone hinges.

I'm not sure about, but I believe the first pic shows EZOn, the second one Robbins.

Can anyone confirm, or give another opinion? Any experiences with one or the other?

Thank you.

I would have said "Electron Tops" in NY because they were by far the best, but it looks like they went under for whatever reason since last year..Their website no longer exists.  It looks like EZ-ON is picking up their business now.  Robbins is good too, so I'd recommend either now.
