Fastback Trunk Bolts - 1968 San Jose
« on: July 25, 2023, 09:48:46 PM »
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am wondering if these bolts are the correct Fastback Trunk Bolts. FYI I was looking in the unrestored section and there was a thread showing an incredibly well preserved survivor 1968 San Jose coupe that had #23 bolts in the trunk hinges to deck lid. Oddly the #23 bolts on my car were on the front fender brackets on the cowl and there were only 2 of them. The AMK catalog shows anchor head pattern. Is there a correct protocol for these bolts or could it vary depending.

Thanks

Move this to 68 section since it is focused on one year only and also a single plant. As mentioned in the past I would not suggest using AMK as a guide to correct head markings for specific cars.

As to your question. Not sure if your asking about specifically your car or all San Jose trunk bolts so will address all. Firstly I believe the same bolts were used on all body types during the same production period/day so we can use additional cars to help estimate when each suppliers were used on the line at San Jose at different periods. Also it appears based on pictures of unrestored cars that the vast majority of call cars had the same bolts used for the trunk hinge to unibody and the trunk hinge to trunk lid.

Looking at what pictures I have San Jose started out using the double hash "" head markings on these bolts. Moved to the SEMS for a short period with the large "T" for lack of a better description in words then moved on to the "23" head markings that you show in your post.  Right now the lowest VIN with those appears to be in the 8R153xxx range

Hope this helps

From my notes, for that type of "sems" screw (AMK Guide to Ford Fasteners - pg 32), the washer does not have teeth or serrations but it is slightly dished. It also has a sharp edge on the edge of the dish that goes against the item to be attached.

The "T" is part of the grade 5.1 marking, which was implemented in 1968 Ford products.
What does the washer and the lead point look like on the screws pictured in the first post of this thread?
