pinion snubber bracket on 9 inch 68 "J" code?
« on: March 07, 2011, 07:45:07 PM »
Does a 68 "J" code Mustang 9 inch differential use the bracket shown in this link?
http://www.cougarpartscatalog.com/68snubbracket.html
If all with the "J" code and 9 inch use this bracket does anyone have an image of what the floor area looks like on a 302 68 with the 9 inch?
Replacing an 8 inch with a 9 and hope to get all of the details correct so appreciate any tips on this swap.  Thanks!

It is a early late thing. that bracket is the later version used in later 68,69,and 70. There is a earlier version that was used in early 68 production . That ad you linked to referred to it as a 67 bracket. oh well maybe they will see this post. In your situation where you are trying to convert i am not so sure it matters and the version in the ad seemed to be a very good price . Bob

Bob, thanks for the reply.  In haste some important facts were left out so will try to provide the reason for the question.   I am converting to a 9 inch on an April 01,1968 San Jose built "J" code with a C 4.  The whole thing started with an AOD conversion, which I love.  Have an 8 inch 3.00 gear now but wanted a 9 inch anyway as these "J" code cars came with either one.  So am putting in a 3.50 open, which along with the AOD will provide a "road gear" of 2.33.  With the 3.00 and OD the final gear now is 1.99 which is pretty tall although the car seemed to do very well on a 1200 mile trip with temps in excess of 100 degrees.  So even though things are being modified in the eyes of many I want to keep things as close to original as possible.  Getting the pinion bracket is not a problem, I have it but only wanted to use it if Ford included it on an April 68 SJ car.  By the way, I assume a GT 350 Shelby used this same set up, not sure about a 28 or 31 spline but as far as the pinion snubber goes it might be the same as any other GT "J" code?  Anybody have one to check?

Not that it couldn't happen but I would be extremely surprised if a April car used the early style bracket. I think the bracket pictured in the link is the most appropriate for what you are doing if mimicking what the J coded built in that time period would have. Unfortunatly the decision on which bracket to use is the least of your worries. There is also a 9 inch bracket that is welded into the sheet metal floor immediately above the rubber pinion snubber that you will have to change as well. It is used on all 9 inch mustangs. There is a early late version of these too but you don't have to worry because it is a 65 Mustang issue. It is completely different then the 8 inch version in your car now. You will have to drill out all of the spot welds and pry it up then weld in the 9 inch unit if you want to be historically accurate.  I notice someone has reproduced the welded in piece and see them frequently on ebay. I hope this helps gives you a overall view. Bob

This is a example of the 67 early 68 style (generally regardless of plant) 9 inch snubber bracket mount . Bob
