67-68 Fastback Weatherstrip
« on: June 15, 2022, 02:42:44 PM »
I have in my possession a supposed pax side NOS roof weatherstrip.
Then a friend came along with an NOS driver's side weatherstrip which is very different in its construction.
The pax side has a woven cotton inside of the rubber and the weatherstrip is very heavy. It's also a nasty piece in that the side against the window is not very smooth at all.
The driver's side is much lighter as it appears to not have the woven cotton, has great detail on the glass side but has Ford numbers as well.

This pax side weatherstrip features the numbers:

Metal tang side:
C6ZB-
63513 A
70-1A

Curve:
C7ZB-6351474-A
S (in square box)

Area that conforms to inside fiberglass:
C7ZB S (in square box)
63513 B60-A

See pic of rough texture on glass side.

Any help on why they are so different? I suspect the one I have is a reject.

Weather strip parts are very often very good examples that one can use to show how very different service replacements were from originals over the decade. In some cases you can see 4-6 different versions and one of the problems, especially in the 90's, when reproducing copies used "NOS" parts to base their reproductions on

Every time Ford needed to resupply the part it was another set of specifications, allowances and low bid process from other outside suppliers

I was so happy I had the one NOS version.
The high.
And then I dragged it out to compare to another NOS version for the other side.
The low.

I get the idea the repops are actually nicer than the crap that's left over.

I have the opportunity to buy an NOS pax side and it's really nice. But $200 nice and once installed can anyone tell?

Often what is found still as service parts even in the 90's was stuff many of us went through in dealerships and refused only to have the part go back in the system. So as the NOS supply dwindled the condition of what was remaining continued a downward spiral.

Think I've mentioned it here before but I got a new rear case for an early alternator many years ago. Great untouched original aluminum and wouldn't you know it it was egged shaped. Likely the reason it was still in the factory box all nice and neat. The only challenge for allot of the reproduction parts is that for a long long time those were not created using original parts but a later, some time much later, service replacement.

As far as the choice consider that at least 75% or so of the weatherstrip will be visible and eye height for anyone judging the car if judging is your measuring stick. If there is a difference they don't have to dig under the car, trunk or dash to look for it. Just a thought

It would be interesting to have a comparison done of the repos vs the original Ford.
I don't know the 'tells.'
