65/66 Upper Control Arm detailing
« on: February 11, 2011, 06:03:17 PM »
I want to confirm some details for Dearborn upper control.  Here is what I think is accurate:
- The shafts and shaft nuts are a phosphate finish
- The arms are dipped black with a natural ball joint end
- Rivets are clear zinc

I would like confirmation on these so I know I've detailed mine correctly.  Also, are the grease fitting hole plugs a zinc finish?  I was told that the arm was dipped with the shafts installed, which would result in the whole arm shaft assembly being black, but I don't believe that is correct.

Thanks to everyone in advance for the help.

Yes, the shaft and shaft caps are usually a darkened color, but I don't know if phosphate would be the exact spec.  But, you are correct that they get covered when the upper arms get dipped anyway.  Depending on when your car was made, it may not have had the holes for the grease plugs on the end caps.  Seems maybe somewhere around the Feb/March time period they switched.

Not sure that the rivets had any coating, but a dulled down zinc would probably be fine.  I imagine the waffle or dome end would have most of the plating obliterated during the pressing process.
