64 1/2 Style Steel Wheels?
« on: January 31, 2011, 04:27:17 PM »
Is there any documented proof of when S/S wheels were available from the factory?  From dealers?  If so, when?

Have seen a couple of early cars with S/S wheels with argent insets (instead of charcoal) and also seen repops marketed as 64 1/2.  My prior understanding was no S/S wheels before September '64.

They showed up on dealer price sheets sometime in July of '64.  So, it's possible some very late 64.5 (generator) cars might have gotten them.  The argent ones were used way into production, most likely until March/April of '65.  Ford documentation notes "65 1/2" options that became available about the same time, which also included the intro of the GT option and interior decor group.

Hey thanks for that.  I'd like to continue on subject of tires for 64 1/2 K codes.  An old friend, and MCA gold card judge, insisted that all came with 15in plain ventilated disk steel wheels and 6.5x15 blackwall tires with Ford Galaxy hubcaps in the trunk - true for both coupe and convertible?  Could dual or single redlines also be had from the factory in June 64?  I know that by Aug 11 they were coming standard with 14" dual redlines and standard hubcaps (have pics from original owner of Aug 11th build HiPO coupe taken shortly after he took delivery).

There was a 15" wheel option, but I have only ever heard of one car that had them... and that was a restored car, so who knows if they were legit.

Only dual redline tires were available from the factory on V8 cars (standard on K codes).

Sure, 14" steel wheels were standard equipment, as well as plain wheel covers.  Wheel covers and SS wheels were optional.

If there was only one, and it was restored, then it must've been the one that belonged to the late Dennis Havens, he was the MCA judge that told me about them (car was red with white interior).
