SJ Oct 64 V8 Automatic Driveshaft Details
« on: March 09, 2016, 07:07:54 AM »
So I am soaking my driveshaft in evaporust right now and someone before painted it black so hoping everything is intact underneath but if not, what stripes were on an A code Fastback with automatic transmission? Also, how can I tell if this is even an original driveshaft? The yoke as a C3 part number on it. No weights are on it.

Thanks
Chris

Found this. I don't know if it is anything though. It is towards the yoke end. This is all I have found so far. :(

Looks like left overs from the stencil marking on the section of tube that was used to make the driveline. Been told that normally three drivelines were made from a section of tune supplied by that supplier so one out of three drivelines original got the stencil. Stencil included a base number and a date at the sen of when the tube was formed

Appears to resemble a W or and M and perhaps an 11.  I'm guessing we don't know what that code means based on other posts...

Typically ends with the letter. Have examples of 4W, 5W and 11W

The 11W was towards the yoke end.  Would the stripes be at the other end if it wasn't switched around?  And I am guessing a white and pink stripe based on other threads being it is an automatic 289

Especially on early drivelines I find the stripes at the rear third. Looking at what I've got I would think Lavender/Strong Pink and then White might have been originally applied

Took some measurements. Did find what I think is a white stripe towards the rear. Is the placement pretty consistent? I thought the stencil would be down further. Also how far from the white stripe would the other one be?

Don't think you'll find the stencil will be consistent with other marks - two different places apply it

Have two examples with the marks I mentioned before in one the first stripe is almost in the middle of the driveline - on the second example the same stripe, from where the rear yoke attaches, approx the same distance as from the forward edge of the rear end yoke  to the mounting face of the third member on an 8's. White looks to be pretty close to half that distance from where the rear yoke attaches

Based on what I could see after soaking and looking at Garth's driveshaft this is what I came up with. Still have the stencil to do but will have to wait till after we move. Now to focus on getting the car to move and more importantly to stop.

Hi All,
It seems that this is the best thread to add to given that my SJ 289 C code automatic convertible was scheduled Oct 20, 1964 but please start a new thread if you feel you should.

So my first band is definitely white. It is 3/4" wide and starts 3 1/4" from the shoulder of the shaft. (Same starting position as in Chris's pictures above)

The second stripe seems to be light blue in color but I could be wrong as it is quite feint. This one is 1" wide and 8" from the shoulder.

I also have a thin red line drawn in wax pencil along the length of the shaft in a free-hand fashion (Not exactly straight), yellow paint on the very end, a yellow stencil that reads

L9078-4N and green paint on the yoke where the bearing goes through.

I would like to confirm the following:

1) The color of the second band - Light Blue?

2) Should the red line be there?

3) Are the stripes and the yellow and green paint correct for my car?

4) What does the 4N mean?

5) Is the counterweight correct or has it been replaced?

Thanks in advance.

The weight used to balance the driveshaft looks like original to me . It looks like a extremely nice unrestored driveshaft.

Guessing that the yellow driveline yoke is the one with the yellow spray mark. This would match other C code 65 auto examples I've seen.

1) The color of the second band - Light Blue?

See below

2) Should the red line be there?

We've seen lines (short or long) and X's applied by hand on the tube. Dont' know if this was applied to the tube or to a finished driveline nor purpose at this point

3) Are the stripes and the yellow and green paint correct for my car?

Color of the stripes vary so much (possibly changed often during the first year of production) can can't comment with any confidence. Have examples from about every month Sept 64-Macth 65 V8 automatics and there is not allot of matches between them, plus so few also have legible colors left

4) What does the 4N mean?

Looking at allot of examples believe it identifies the supplier and possible also the plant of the tube marker. Neither month or year fits what has been documented unless the number represents the month

5) Is the counterweight correct or has it been replaced?

Have seen the washer weight before but never considered it an original one in the past. Can't be certain but in over 500 drive line pictures could not find another.
