65 vin decoding
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:23:11 PM »
Have a question on a vin for a car I was thinking about going to look at to buy.

Vin reads  5f07x

I thought that the x stood for 390 engine, but I don't think that they offered that engine in this year.  Am I right or wrong.

you are correct. the 'X' code was only offered on the 390-2bbl engine in 1968. probably a factory misstamp.

Are you sure it's an X and not a K?

My thoughts exactly. A distorted K could look like an X.....

no car isn't in California,

probably right on it being a K code and not an x.

This car is for sale by me in WI, and I was thinking about looking at it.   wasn't sure on the coding of the vin though.  I will check with the owner again on the vin.

Thanks for all your info.

GO PACKERS!

Ok-- I talked to the guy today,  the vin he gave me is the one on the paperwork for the title,  there are no tags on the fender or door.   How do I go about finding out about this car.  I'm wondering if it was stolen at some time long ago.

Or should I just steer clear of it alltogether.

Thanks

DON'T WALK,  RUNNNN!
This car is unidentifyable if none of the three fender apron stampings are not present.
The car could possibly be stolen and there's no way to marry the title to the car.

As an ex Georgia State Trooper, I can tell you that unless the history of THIS car is completely intact, verifyable, and documented, substantiating why the VIN stamping are missing, and providing enough evidence that the car IS the one on the title, it will always be suspect.

The hidden VIN's may still be present.  If not, then definitely steer clear of this one.

Roundhead,
Just in case you are not famliar,  When Charles says "hidden VIN's,"  he's referring to two stamped VIN's in the fender aprons that are covered up by the mounting flanges of the right and left fenders.

bryanncobb--   the hidden vins are in the fender aprons where?   under them?

I'm guessing that this car looks too good too be true and I'm going to have to walk from it.

man what a sweet car though.

One will be under the passenger side fender.  Probably in the area between the starter selnoid and the shock tower.  The other will be on the driver side under the fender towards the hood spring.  At least that is the most common areas.
