65 SJ Running Change Thread - Fastback Trunk Lid Spring Details
« on: October 25, 2020, 05:06:38 PM »
This thread is designed to Illustrate some of the running changes related to the fastback trunk lid springs and hinges during the first year of production at the San Jose plant. The thread is a continuation, of sorts, of an earlier general thread on the differences and a link is provided below.

http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=17932.0

This time we focus on one plant, the data provided in that thread and my collection of data. Like other running changes we can not be exact on change over sates since we don't have solid information of when each car was finished so we will rely on sequential numbers and the factories planned date. Because of this we could end up with a few examples with higher dates or numbers being assembled before cars with lower/earlier dates or numbers.

Since I'm attempting to cover a handful of different specific details in one thread rather than have a half dozen or more threads covering each on individually I hope this comes off well enough to communicate the findings and data. Thanks to you that contributed both publically and privately.

As always these findings are shown collectively in the main Running Change Thread for 65 San Jose cars

Passenger End of the Fastback Trunk Lid Spring -

In the survey the highest San Jose sequential numbered example with the inward pointed passenger end was -5R09C142xxx
The lowest sequential number example with the outward bent trunk lid spring found was - 5R09C1508xx.

A difference of about 8,000 units most of them being unrelated (to the subject) coupes.

Should be mentioned that the change also affected how the spring was held to the lower arm. Changing from the otter key retainer to the round toothed disc.

NOTICE that these two features appear to have changed at or just about the same time in production according to current findings

Drivers Side Trunk Hinge -

In the survey the highest San Jose sequential numbered example with the driver's side hinge with the "cage" feature was -5R09C142xxx
The lowest sequential number example with the driver's side trunk hinge without the "cage" feature was - 5R09C1508xx.

A difference of about 8,000 units most of them being unrelated (to the subject) coupes.

Like the design change of the trunk lid spring and the retainer the use of the cage appears to have taken place at the same time during production.

Should mention the painted/installed electrical wire clip placed over the end of the trunk spring in the picture above. We will be getting to that detail later.
