Topic: Gas tank filler neck sealant

Osborn manyal shows 1/4 Sealant bead at  gas tank neck to gasket or body. Not sure where the sealant goes, what 1/4 means and what kind of sealant to use?

Don't ever remember seeeing sealant there, just a cork gasket. If there would be I would bet on strip caulk

It is stripe caulk.

So 1/4 means 1/4" wide strip of rope caulk all the way around between the filler neck flange and the gasket or the gasket and the tail panel? Thanks.

I never took much notice of this before, but most every original filler neck I find has some trace of strip caulk at top where it goes through the tail light panel, gray or black.

Ah so the 1/4 may mean at the top 1/4 of the flange (circle) to keep water out at the filler neck flange screws protruding through the cork gasket. The flange does have an indentation in the face where you could fit some rope caulk into it. I think the cork gasket should keep water out between the flange and the tail panel but the screws could still be an issue. Some have mentioned installing 2 cork gaskets instead of just one. Any recommendations on doing this?

Folks recommend installing 2 gaskets on 65-66 models to compensate for bad bodywork.  If the original flange is preserved, it's not a problem to use one gasket with one bead of strip caulk.
