Would a 1970 351w 2V have a vin stamped block?
« on: August 15, 2020, 09:59:20 PM »
Just what the title states. We just removed my sons 351 Windsor from his 70 Mach I and I am looking to see if the Block would be stamped with the Vin number? Dates of the block and heads are before his build date which is September 1969 so it might be the original engine? We will start to tear down soon but curious if there is a place I can look for a stamped vin number.

The engine block in my '70 Mach has a partial VIN stamped on it. I have a 351C 2 bbl. and the VIN is stamped on the rear vertical face of the block. I believe there was a federal law that required the VIN to be stamped on all engine blocks beginning with the 1968 model year as a theft deterrent.

I have looked everywhere on the rear of the block and even the sides and I am not finding any Vin stamped. The date code of the block looks to be July 20, 1969 which seems a little early for September built car? But it’s better than being two months after, LOL. The heads are close to the block, just can’t remember the exact dates right now. Can you post a pic of where your Vin number was stamped?
Thanks!

I’ve looked over this area but cannot find a vin. Is there a chance this block could be a replacement where they removed the vin, or was someone forgetful the day it was supposed to be stamped?  The block is dated 9F20 and the heads are 9F3 and 9F13, too early for a Sept build car?

I have a number of small block 70's in my records with a similar 3 month spread from the block castings.

Could be a replacement (under warranty)

Was your transmission  stamped?

Not sure want the penalty was for getting caught not stamping an engine or transmission for the plant or company.

Good point Jeff. This car has a FMX that we will be removing this weekend. Where would that stamping be located??

Don't have any pictures showing the location  but given when they were typically stamped and how the other automatics were stamped in 70 they would likely be on the top side . At least that is where I would start looking on the main body of the transmission. Being that it is cast steel that may be why why they are harder to see and stamp into the surface

So we got the tranny out, unfortunately it is stamped D2AP7006AR on the casing so can't be the original. It is a beast and must weigh over 100lbs! I'll look closer when I have time to find a VIN on it. Right now I am not seeing much, not even a tag. I'm guessing it could be a rebuilt replacement but who knows. This is only fueling the fire for my son's "want" to place a five speed in the car and switch from an automatic. I'm trying to have him keep it stock but you know how kids are (and I was one of them!).  ::)
