1966mustang water pump question
« on: August 13, 2020, 10:47:17 PM »
I have a 1966 mustang with an A code 289 engine. The front timing cover is aluminum. The water pump is cast iron. Is this the correct pump? I have seen comments elsewhere that aluminium pumps went with aluminum front covers and cast iron pumps went with cast iron timing covers.

SB timing covers are typically aluminum up to a least the mid 70's. I don't pay much attention to those details after the 60's. The water pump on the SB changed to cast iron in late 65 production . Your 66 would have a C6OE marked cast iron water pump from the factory.

there are no cast iron timing covers in '66 or any other year. your source is incorrect.

Is this for concours?
There are a great many visible differences on timing covers. Ribs, no ribs, etc.

For the late 65, all of 66 and early 67 there were ribs. Later 67 had no ribs. Per Mannel (Appendix E, page E3, note 6)

Yes I agree. Good reference.
I was suggesting the OP go look so the version he has can be verified as correct or needing replacement.
