Question on 65/66 NJ GT Emblems.
« on: November 18, 2015, 08:12:22 AM »
Can anyone help with a question that Charles Turner and I have been discussing of late.

the question is relating to the approx date change over off plastic and ceramic GT emblems on ONLY NJ built mustangs.

Topic has been discussed on SJ cars but NJ cars have avoided my interest until recently.

would be greatful to here from owners of unrestored/original cars built in NJ before and after January 1966.

Took a look at my pictures - not sure how much help but here it is

From the ones were it was clear which style it was - all were the earlier ceramic style and all of the following had been repainted (possible reason for replacing the original emblems

6T107611 - ceramic - Appears to be original
6T167167 - ceramic  - Original?
6T209518 - ceramic  - Original?
6T274395 - ceramic  - Original?

THANKS JEFF.

I still think a little more digging from my end before im convinced of a transition period for a upcoming project

so through my pictures and information I came up with the following to add.

6T 153*#@  ceramic style. MCA SHOW AUGUSTA GEORGIA
6T 161*#@  ceramic style. AUSTRALIAN CAR
6T 181*#@  ceramic style. FILE PHOT
6T 227*#@  plastic style.   MCA SHOW PARK CITY UTAH

Just my input, hoping to narrow it down prior to rebuild

I'm going to plead ignorance....I never paid much attention to these and thought they were all the same. I know mine are original with the car as are the hipo emblems. 6T12xxxx (mid October) looks to be a few months ahead of where you will probably land for an approximate cutover date.

How do you determine ceramic vs. plastic without cutting into it? Is it the red background color only?

Just adding some images to the post

pictures attached are the 3 variations of GT emblems I have found over the years,

first image shows the ceramic (darker red) 65 variation followed by the 66 plastic (silver variation) and then another plastic version (gold variation)

the second image shows the backside in same order as first picture. the 65 ceramic style has no part numbers on the back side of this example but both 66 plastic style have part/casting numbers on them

the thing which I have noticed in the application of the 66 plastic gold style emblem fourth image is that I have only seen them used on Australian Falcons to date, so not sure it they are ever applicable to mustangs. its just my observation.......

lets see where we go from here.

and from previous post the 65 emblems are a great deal heavier in weight than the plastic version. the difference of both style are really evident when you see them first hand

Regards.

Thanks for the side by side pictures, that helps answer my question. I have the darker version shown.

Prior to asking my question I had searched and the only thing I found on this site shows a different conclusion for the backs http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=5517.msg30998#msg30998

I tried to remove one of mine to get a look at the back but it wasn't moving and I was heading out of town so didn't have time to mess with it. I'll see if I can pop one off later this week or maybe someone else will chime in.

I realize this post is several years old, but the subject still seems relevant to my question.
I have a GT emblem that I acquired with the purchase of a 64.5 coupe that was an export and was returned to the States.
The car at the time I purchased it seemed unrestorable so I stripped it of usable parts and scrapped the rest.
The car had no fenders when I purchased it, but this GT badge was found in the car.   The car had Disc Brakes but I do not believe it was a GT.
I’ve attached a picture of the badge and a 66 badge for comparison.
Any thought on what this badge is from?

Would guess that since you mentioned that the car was a 64 1/2  then it might not have been built at NJ?

I appreciate the comments.  Maybe I could have been more clear in my original post.

The GT emblem was found in an exported 64.5 coupe (with a box of other random parts).

I am not suggesting that it belonged with the car or that the car was from NJ or a GT.

I have only been aware of two types of GT badges, the 65 style and 66 style as described early in the thread.

This badge appears to be different from those two styles.

My question is only about the badge and whether it is a Ford GT badge from any era.

Finally got around to pulling emblems and also compared to Brian's pictures in http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=5517.msg30998#msg30998

I recall getting a service replacement from Ford back in the 80's (image on right) which appears to match what Phill posted in this thread and Brian in the other. The front of the emblem on the left appears to match the C5ZB version Brian shows however the back is clearly different.

1. Looking at the G the service replacement has more black in the area circled and the red ends in a rounded point instead of the sharper point on the left.

2. The top of the G on the left measures ~ .40" from the point shown. The replacement is ~.50 and the overall height of the GT alone is ~ 1.11" on both. When comparing with Brian's picture by zooming to identical sizes on an iPhone, the dimensions align for both left and right images.

3. The 5 points at the top of the Service replacement are rounded while the other is not. This also appears to be identical To Brian's 65 OEM piece

I can't confirm the emblem on the left was born with car but do know it's been with the car since at least 1978.
