Correct color for HiPo vibration dampener 1965
« on: July 11, 2020, 07:19:00 PM »
Hi

Restoring my early (Feb. 14, 1965) K-code Mustang assembled in San Jose and need advice on the correct color for the 271 engine's large vibration dampener.  It appears to be black, but I'm unable to tell if it was glossy, semi-gloss, or flat.  Thanks for any suggestions.  Ron

Almost all the bolt-on items in the engine compartment were painted semi-gloss black (as well as the fender aprons). However, some were spray painted and some were dipped painted, and they were done in different areas and by different suppliers/workers, and that results in differences, which leads to the conclusion, as long as there is a visible "difference", you're on the right track. A lot (IT IS TWO WORDS) of dipped parts had visible drips and runs (think gravity), and tended to be "glossier" than spray painted items. I just finished blasting and painting a pair of front seat frames that had visible paint buildups on the edges on the own hanging side - dipped and glossy (after 50 plus years). Your dampener is semi gloss black. I believe it was spray painted with the large round part up (engine side down).

Sprayed semi-gloss black. But not much fading to none of the area that the timing cover seals runs. They didn't want a heavy coat with the concerns of the seal and also where the center retaining washer would seat and the pulley would attach
