New Rotor to Original Hub Installation
« on: July 07, 2020, 10:59:22 PM »
Restoring the rotors on my K code, August, Dearborn 1966 fastback, I have pressed off the old original Kelsey Hayes rotors from the hubs. Glass bead blasted and painted the hubs with Eastwood cast iron high temp manifold paint. Glass beaded and Mag phosphated the original studs. I have the new Centric rotors ordered from NPD. Now I am ready to reassemble the new rotors to the hubs. My questions are, what orientation do I mate the rotor to the hub? Does it matter? Do I need to  take assembled units to an automotive machine shop for balancing? Can they balance a two-piece unit? Or just true up the rotor surface? Any help from those on the forum who have already done this process would be greatly appreciated.

Once you change out the rotor hat there is no orientation that is relevant anymore. Balancing would be best but I don't know of any places that do that. You definitely have to have the surface trued up /turned. I have never bothered to balance and have not had any issues. Lucky? I don't know but I haven't heard negative feedback from others ether.Just my experience ,others may have different.

Since you are going to all of the trouble with the original hubs and rotor hat then I would suggest detailing the center sides of the rotor hat and the outside edges too. The center is a darker cast steel and the outside edges are machined steel.

To add to Bob's comment: The hub is balanced as a stand-alone item as is the rotor.  Unless there is a machining issue that caused the rotor to be off-center to the hub It's unlikely you'll have any issue what so ever.   What's frustrating is the first time they get heat soaked and moisture the rotor starts to surface rust.
I was able to reuse all my original studs. They are marked K/H on the head. Were yours?
They look great by the way!

Yes, I am reusing the original studs and they did have the KH head markings on them. I will detail the black painted part of the rotor with cast iron paint to look more original. Thanks for every ones help. It's nice to be able to keep the original Kelsey Hayes rotors but they do wear out beyond limits and sooner or later most Mustangers will have to replace them to keep their cars safe to drive. Keeping the original hubs and studs to me helps preserve what you can of the original parts.
