1967 door markings
« on: May 04, 2020, 11:06:10 AM »
All, I thought I would post a few pics of my recent findings. While in the process of removing an old damaged door skin and installing a new one, I zip-stripped the inner metal in order to clean the paint out of the “grain” of the door. I had put one heavy coat of gel zip-strip on this door and cleaned it off. I then put a second light coat of aerosol zip strip and I was amazed of the, what looks to be, orange grease pencil markings all over the door . I can make out an “OK” written under where the lower door hinge mounts. I can also make out what appears to be a date and 7 AM behind the door panel. And there are numerous “tic” marks of where bolts and fasteners will be attached to the door. Curious if anyone has ever seen something like this? Wonder if it was a training example at the plant?

Just to confirm. This is from your Nov 66 NJ built car?

When and where matters ;)

November would be a little late in the year to be doing training and if would suggest that something changed or they were having problems with workers or a practice. After being used it was tossed into inventory to be used on the line? Guess it could happen.  I for one have not seen another marked just like this so I suggest others not to copy.

Thanks for sharing

This one is not from my stable. It was bought last fall at the Fall-Carlisle show in PA. It was an original door that has only a few tiny holes of rot in the bottom (where as major rot is common for well used NorthEastern cars by this time). It could be from anywhere I guess. I can get a pic of the stamping but I know it starts with a 1. These marks were absolutely under the paint and were not exposed until I stripped the paint. The outside was a repaint but the jams and interior of this door have been untouched (originally lime gold ext.,  black inter.). I was just curious if it was some sort of QA where someone was checking the machine stamping? Almost every opening whether it was for a door bumper, screw attachment for the door latch, or where the regulator mounted had an orange tic mark. Just found this very strange and thought I would share. If it doesn't belong in this category, please feel free to move it. I agree that this doesn't represent "normal" behavior..

Thanks so a door from some unknown plant.  Category is fine - its a 67.  And we've been placing paint daubs and markings in specific year sections unless the explanation or application stretches across multiple years
