1970 428 CJ mount mount color Are they black?
« on: April 14, 2020, 01:05:11 AM »
I thought the frame mounts were black and the isolators (rubber) were black and the engine bracket bare steel.  Is this correct?

For 70 the frame mounts are black .69 were bare steel.

There are a number of tear  down pictures of a 70 Dearborn built CJ convertible in the Unrestored picture thread section here is a picture from that thread showing that the frame part of the mount - made up of two sections - was both black and natural

Hope this helps. May want to check out the tread for some additional details. and a few more pictures of the mounts ;)

This topic is of interest to me because of what I found during my 1970 428CJ disassembly. The mounts where semi-gloss black, but the side clamp brackets where plated in yellow zinc before install, then possibly painted before the rubber motor mounts where installed. Additionally the mounts had color coding for the LS and RS mounts "under" the side clamp brackets, perfectly preserving the color coding. See attached pics
Also of interest where  the trap door hinges which where also yellow zinc plated before install. See attached pics
I decided to reproduce these finished to the original findings on my car.
Hope this also helps with some input on this topic

Have some examples with white markings on the frame mount on both sides of the engine compartment. Since these were shared with many other engine combinations there are allot more examples of them than the engine side of the mounts

I guess I will do black.  It sounds like some were black and in Ma it will help with the inevitable rust!

The 70 side L shaped engine frame brackets were yellow zinc and the one side has a big R stamped in it unlike the 67-69 L brackets that were bare steel.

Excellent that's good news, that I do have it right based on the findings on my car. The middle picture in my previous post is my finished DS assembly, with the mount bracket semi-gloss black, the L bracket yellow zinc, and all the bolts and nuts phosphate and oil and the motor mount is NOS which I purchased over 25 years ago. The PS is the same. Also the engine brackets are bare metal with phosphate and oil bolts and washers also. And you are correct regarding the R marking, its on the PS mount, Thanks.

Look at the L shaped side bracket for the 70 type R stamped .

Yup got it, unfortunately 50 year old pieces with some corrosion don't show up as shiny when re-plated, but the plating still covers well, see attached
