68 valve stem extension
« on: March 14, 2020, 10:28:34 PM »
What is the correct length for a 68 Shelby valve stem extension? I have one that was on the car that I thought was original and it is almost 1 inch with a metal cap. The reproductions are 3/4 of an inch with a white plastic cap. Also did the spare have the extension?

Marty, I don't have the exact info, but going by memory, it was a C6AA-1705 number for the extensions.  D2 comes to mind, which is the 1 1/4".

These came in a small envelope in the wheel cover box, believe there were only 4.  There would be no need to install one on the spare.

I have a package of the C6AA-1705-B2 (set of 4 pcs).
They say 3/4" long on the package but that is the installed height (how much longer the stem is when screwed on).
If you measure them end to end they are 1 1/8" or so.

The 60-68 MPC says the 1 1/4" for the 67/ Mustang is B7A-1705-A
and the 65-67 Mustang is 7/8" long C0DZ-1705-A insinuating it's for full wheel covers.

So, it appears there are installed and total length measurements with the MPC possibly being total and the package saying installed.

I tried the 3/4 inch that is in the picture but it is too short, the air chuck would scratch the hub cap. I found some 1.25 inch at O Reilly's, they seem a bit long. I think they may have been 1 inch like the one in the previous picture.

The 1 1/4" looks right.  Probably best to check w/Pete Disher.

OK Hub cap king reporting in. First of all it’s important to remember when you are reading the extension length that is the way that it extends the valve stem and not the overall length of the extension. The extension screws on the valves them about 3/8 of an inch so if it says three-quarter inch extension will measure 1 1/8 but extend the valve stem 3/4
From A.O. Smith inventory records I show that both the B2 and the C2 were used. I have actual packages from original cars that have the C6 C2 stamping on them. It appears that both were used but the C2 give little more length probably a better choice. In any case originals had metal balls and not plastic

I have one unopened original package (not service parts) from an original box of hubcaps and it has 4 extensions in the bag with 4 blue plastic washers that would go up inside the extension.  Their overall length is 1-5/16 (plastic) not including the metal ball.

I remember this extension length discussion several years back and I thought the lengths were as you measured. I can't remember the website (I've been on several) that discussed this, so I was reluctant to say what I thought was the originals. Over the years, Ford Service dropped the longer ones substituting the 7/8 inch long variety for all applications. It's a matter of inventory practicality, they can't stock everything.
Off topic, what's happening in Ridgemark? And your website is down.
