67 interior door handles
« on: January 30, 2019, 09:11:49 PM »
One of my interior door handles is excellent, but the other is not good enough, so I posted a wanted ad here.  As I looked into it further, I see that I have two very similar, but different, handles.

The nice one is stamped C7ZB-6522614-A, and the bad one is C7OB-622614-A.  If you look at the area highlighted by the pencil, you will see the only difference that I can find.

Keep in mind that this is an interior decor car.  The difference is largely hidden in the door panel cup.

The MPC calls out a C7ZZ-6522600-A for interior decor.

Has anyone noticed this?

As for history, I do back in 1981 that the deluxe door panels were unobtanium, and there was a local (Dearborn/Detroit) guy buying old door panel cores and reburbishing them.  My driver's door panel was really beat up, so I found a nice original green one and dyed it blue.  So yes, the door panels were off.  But I don't recall ever changing the handles, and my memory is pretty good.

Hi John, I replied to your other handle question as well. There is another difference you may not have noticed. Look at the curve of the end of the handle where it curves toward the door panel when installed. The C7 number handle does not curve in as far. That is so the end of the handle will be further away from the aluminum trim on the door panel as to not scratch it when pulled and released. If you have any other inquiries on these handles, please email me.   Paul

Yes John you have discovered the difference between standard and deluxe 67 door handles.
I see a lot of incorrect ones on restored cars.

I think NOS (Service Replacements) Interior Decor Inside Door Handles are also unobtainium. Re-Chroming originals are the BEST way OR buy S.D. Replacements. The numbers are on the insides of the 'pulls' so a keen judge might use a mirror and identify any reproduction handle, though otherwise they look very nice..

I have both my originals and plan on tossing them into a future batch but I also bought the Scott Drake ones to use in a pinch if I do not like the quality of the plating work.

I have tried for about 2-years to find Service Replacements but you have been very fortunate lately in finding the unobtainium so by all means, never rule that out ;)

Part numbers are not looked at in the MCA Concours Trailered or Driven Classes. A reproduction that has fit, finish and function would receive no deduction.
The Thoroughbred class would be a different situation.

I did a bit more research and was able to identify more differences between the C7ZB and C7OB handles, please see the attached file.

Some of the differences might encroach upon the "fit" and "function" arena.

Paul, I'm physically comparing a C7ZB to C7OB, I'm not looking at any C5 parts on this interior door handle topic (other than the mention within the MPC which I am fairly certain is one of those one size fits all situations).

Marty, I'm thinking that is deeper than that.  I would assume that the standard is a C5 part, as indicated in the MPC.  In my case, I'm comparing the C7ZB to C7OB.  But of course one of those might be a 1967 direct replacement for the standard C5 part, and you might be right.

At this point I'm thinking that the C7ZB part is "most" correct for at least early to my 67, because the 67 deluxe door panel was new and unique, and requiring a new part would make sense.  The MPC does bear that out as well.

I have no idea how the C7OB fits into the equation.

The C7 ZB was used only with the deluxe door panels and the open end faces forward and upward. The C7 OB was used only on standard interiors it was installed facing forward and down ward. IMHO this was done to protect the occupants from the handle in event of a crash. The 67 assembly manual bares this all out.

Marty, to close the look I did find this, but not in the interior manual, it was in the body manual, plain as day.  Sorry I missed it, but now I'll never forget...

Some time I just can not figure out why some things were placed where they were. May be they wanted us to look through all of the manuals for practice. LOL
