Looking at purchasing a 1970 Boss 302
« on: November 08, 2019, 07:52:52 PM »
just new to the Forum:
i m looking at purchasing a partially completed 1970 Boss 302.  Hopping to get some advice from those of you that know a lot more about these cars than myself. The vin and Marti  report say its a legitimate Boss 302. The owner says It has the #s matching 302 & that all the maching on the motor has been done! but i believe it has sat like that for quite a long time. The transmission is not #s matching but it is reported to be period correct. All the sheet metal work and paint have been done. He did not paint the car the original colour. I have seen the Car once about two years ago and it does look good. As i said i m looking for some advice.

Welcome to the forum. Take pictures, lots of pictures. Look at some of the detail pictures that Jeff posts to get an idea. Has the car been inside or exposed to the elements? What state? Look at the price of a "restored" 70 Boss 302, subtract what you are preparred to pay - that's your budget. Don't worry, you will exceed it.

Welcome to the site

Some basics. but first none of the following relate directly the the specific car your looking at. I don't know the VIN, any details of the car or anything else. These are just general comments that would be shared with anyone looking at just about any classic Mustangs

First the Marti report does not tell you that the car your looking at is a Boss 302. It only confirms that there was a car built with the VIN and it was a Boss 302 followed by all the details.

Since the car is apart your going to need to do a full inventory of what is included with the car, what is needed to complete the car and in turn figure out what those items are going to cost you then likely double that number

You'll need to determine how much of the car was replaced during the rebuild, if all the correct (for a 70 Boss) panels are there and how that affects your feelings and value of the car once completed. Everyone has different levels of what is acceptable to them.

When the car and the body is inspected you will want to look for what should be there and what you find that should not be there. Every detail has a story and is part of the over all evaluation of a car.  If your not familiar with these cars I suggest you hire someone that is. It is a very small investment for piece of mind and should provide some level of confidence as to where your starting. Don't believe you learn enough "on the job" to do that your self without allot of time.

You will have to determine if a color change is acceptable. Plenty of opinions about that but its only really important to you now and possibly to a potential buyer when it comes time to sell

Good luck with your inspection and hope things work out well.  If you have specific questions please ask. Also you might want to take some time to look through the unrestored 70 picture threads. Not allot of 70 Boss's shared so far but it is a start and should be a small help. I currently own a 69 and have owned and judged 70's also
