65 K code air cleaner question
« on: September 25, 2019, 06:53:20 PM »
I have a 65 K code convertible VIN :76A K 26 10M 81 5 E   Serial # 5F08K368524.
I want to purchase a new air cleaner but I get conflicting info on what to get
Seems that with a build date of December 64  I should use a "double hump/black bottom" but some say ALL 65's used the flat top Gold bottom.
I have been told that the Gold bottom air cleaners did not appear until after February 65.

Is there a definitive answer for this ?
Thanks

First, welcome to the forum. According to the book, "The 289 High Performance Mustang" (Tony Gregory), the 64 type top was used into "early" 65 production. That is not defined by a change over date. Your car is 5 months into production, a later lid would probably be appropriate, considering the scarcity of early HP parts. The base is gold.

First welcome to the site

Looking at some unrestored fall 64 Dearborn built cars it appears that the change from the early to the later version and Jim wrote.

Change may have been a couple months prior to your cars projected build date so even if they were off a month you should be pretty good with that answer

Thanks for the response's guys.
I'm kind of torn now as a respected(admin) member of a hipo site tells me that the "double hump" is correct for my car.
Tony Gregory's book says the Gold bottom...
I wish there was a clear cut answer....

I agree on the base being originally painted gold.

Here is an example up close- one of the examples that had the later style top. Notice the VIN of the car - 5F0xK354xxx. Could have been completed on the same week or even day as your car - we just don't know that detail.

OK  Gold base is it !
Although I kinda liked the double hump and black matches the engine color...
