65 Standard Door Mirror Markings
« on: September 02, 2019, 05:36:37 PM »
Looking to see what the exterior markings were on factory original standard door mirrors for 1965. Did they have FoMoCo markings visible on the base or mirror housing? Any difference in markings with Ford service replacement parts? Believe the correct part number to be C3RZ-17696-A.

Looks like the standard door mirror by Rotunda had markings under the base, inside the base only.

I don't recall any exterior mirrors with any exterior/visible Ford/Rotunda/FoMoCo markings.

Since the non-remote mirrors were installed at the dealers you could have them install just about anything that would fit or the salesman could up sell the buyer when they picked up the car. Have seem some odd ones though most just used the standard mirrors

Yep.  That's all it had... A Rotunda Oval under the base... That was it.  The part number might have been stamped in there too.. but that's all.

Believe you will find the identification raised/cast into the metal rather than stamped

Thank you. I was trying to find a picture of an original Ford standard door mirror for 65 but could not, just the Rotunda showed up, and yes the Rotunda mark was cast under the base. I’m guessing an original Ford would also show FoMoCo oval under its base but not sure. Nice to have confirmed that there are no external manufacture markings. I pulled my two standard door mirrors off and they are both marked Pro Products. I bought the car 12 years ago, just assumed the mirrors were original. Looking to replace them since they have lost tension for holding position.

I think it is embossed, much like the radiators. One of the mirrors on my blue fastback has a mirror that has rotunda underneath.

I’ve studied several replacement standard mirrors and there is also a design variation of the base (or rather the stem coming out of the base) that is worth noting for reference here.  Most versions I’ve found with a Rotunda box will often compare to many assembly versions used on early cars.  Most assembly line mirrors I’ve removed and studied will have a rather thin and more flat ridge about 3/32” that runs from the base of the screw hole up the neck to the cone where the mirror attaches to.  Some replacements will not have the flat ridge and are more pointed which I haven’t seen used on any unrestored cars.  Also, look at this photo of two variations of the edge design near the outter screw hole area.  One shows this ridge running through the hole and continuing to the bottom of the base, where the other sort of goes around the hole.  The correct version will have the ridge running straight through the hole.

Just adding to this post. I have an NOS Rotunda example, and a later NOS "Ford" example. Both have the "flat" ridge as you are describing. Would it seem that Rotunda examples , (early) , should NOT have the flattened ridge?
Of Course both mirrors are identical with the exception of the Rotunda mirror having different mold numbers under the base and the Rotunda base has a molded "Rotunda" cast as well. (see pics). The later Ford version has a different cast mold number and NO Rotunda cast, as one would assume.
Comments?

Thanks for posting those pictures of the standard 65/66 door mirrors. I’ve not seen originals before, only the remote mirrors from Rotunda show up on eBay. Whatever the mirror that was on the dealers shelf when mustangs were first purchased, since the 64 1/2 and 65s did not come from the factory with door mirrors, it is likely that if mirrors were added later in 65 or 66 that the ones you posted would have been the ones used by the dealer.
