67 Another Finish Question - Rearend related this time
« on: December 31, 2015, 09:08:28 PM »
67  9" Rear. What is the correct finish for the 10 nuts that attach the center section to the rear axle tube?
What is the correct finish for the 5 bolts that attach the pinion housing to the center section?
Thanks in advance

The studs that hold the third member to the housing - Dark heat treated metal Would do the pinion retainer bolts the same

The nuts that go on those studs appear to be zinc plated

Don't forget the copper sealing washers ;)

For what it's worth - the 1967 only, 1960-68, and 1965-72 Master Parts Catalogs, as well as the Standard and Utility Parts Catalogs, all show the Carrier (third member) nuts to housing as either Cadmium or Zinc Plated, and the Pinion Bearing Retainer Bolts as Plain Steel. The Washers for the Carrier Nuts are shown as Plain Steel in the 67 Only and the 1960-68 MPC's (3/8" nominal, 25/64 I.D., 21/32 O.D., 1/16 thick), but in the 1965-72 MPC (printed in May of 1975) they are shown as Copper, 3/8" nominal,13/32 I.D., 19/32 O.D.,3/64 thick.

Thanks Bob - seems to match

Unfortunately Ford description only includes if the hardware part is painted, dyed or plated. Because of this the descriptions don't list the look or "color" of the bare metal ;)

Somewhat like judging sheets that use the term "natural" to describe parts that were not painted but either bare or plated

I had the copper sealing washers on all of the carrier bolts on my 67 9".
It appears to be original as the gasket appeared stock too.
Zinc or cad on the nuts, too.
