I had my original factory remote rear view mirror (C5ZB-17682-A) re-chromed and as an interim replacement, put an aftermarket remote mirror in its place, waiting for a batch of chrome plating to be done. That was several years back. I procrastinated for a long time to put the original back. In that period of time, the (after market) mirror part became loose from the base. It had to come off to tighten the screw, so it became very practical to put the original back (no more excuses). The problem I ran into was the three control cables on the door attached control housing, which went where. Here's their location:
From the back of the control, the red cable goes to the right top; the green cable goes to the left top; the yellow goes to the bottom. The Ford original (C3RA-17A748-A) does not have colors marked on the plate, only "TOP" on the top. There is a Rotunda logo on the bottom. The aftermarket version I have does have the color initials marked - R, G, Y - on the plate. Test the mirror control before you attach it to the door.
If you are putting an after market remote control mirror on your car, or installing an original, make sure there is a lock washer on the screws from the base to the mirror housing. The same applies to the matching right hand mirror - a lock washer.
For reference, the hex socket screw size for the window crank and door latch (both regular and deluxe) is 5/32 inch.
A friend with a 66 Fairlane says that the same remote is used on other Fords.
This replacement was on a 66 Mustang, 65 is identical.

Painting the colors on the cable terminations and cable ends befor disassembly is recommended.

 Hey Jim, I  wanted to let you know that I replaced my 66 remote mirror with a newer reproduction. The prior mirror was also reproduction but about 20 years old and I will say that the newer one was better quality. It also had the cables marked. I recently purchased a bunch of NOS parts and in this purchase was a remote mirror control for 65/66. As you can see it is labeled on the back casting with R, Y, and G. I guess Ford improved on the design?

Mine is a factory original and it has the same vendor/Rotunda number stamped (raised) on the inside bottom but without color ID stamped in the cable retainer plate. Yours is a service replacement which would indicate Ford got "smart" and stamped in the color letters. On mine, the three cables and housing were color coded with what appears to be a translucent dye. It faded over the years (age and my handling).
