Drill Size to remove door data plate 64.5
« on: June 25, 2019, 12:47:03 PM »
I am inquiring about the drill size to use for removing the original door data plate before painting the door.  I have new rivets, but unsure what size bit to use to remove the originals.  Also, what is the procedure to reinstall the rivets.  I searched the archives but no luck.
Thanks.
Phil

Never used a drill just used a pliers from the back side to squeeze the rivet where its ballooned during the installation then wiggled the rivet a bit and pushed it out from the back side. In some cases (before I started to use this method I would just punch the center out making it easier to push inward then push it out. Both work without making any holes larger or using any power tools

Usually the handle end of a screwdriver or the end of a small hammer can be used to push the rivets out of the holes.

Just so that there is no doubt or confusion...and not to be offensive...but for the procedure that Charles shared, this should be performed from inside the door cavity, with the intent of pushing the rivets out towards the data plate.

I have only done it once, but this worked for me. I inserted the previously removed original rivets. Then had a friend hold a body dolly on the front (data plate) side of the rivet, making sure that the data plate and rivet was tight to the door. On the back side I put a drift against the rivet and tapped lightly with a small ball-peen hammer.  I stopped as soon as the plate was tight.   There might be a better idea out there.

If you are using new rivets this might not work

I ground the point flat on a 16d nail.

If you drive a Needlpoint probe through the center of one of the rivets..You can get the Aluminum Rivets out one at a time from the Front side...without damaging the Dataplate.  The backside is always the best route if the door panel is already off... You just push it out from the back..

Installation is even easier...  Just find a drill bit where the back of the drill bit (Rear side that normally enters the drill) fits the front depression of the Dataplate rivet.  Give it a light Tap with a small hammer on the drill end....enough to sink the center of the Aluminum rivet in...and you are good to go..

Thanks to all for the ideas on the rivets.
