First start up 64.5 260 with Generator
« on: June 05, 2019, 04:03:38 PM »
I am close to doing the first fire up of a totally restored engine, generator (new armature & brushes), voltage regulator, and related wiring.  Is there anything special I need to do because of the generator, or just turn the key and pray all works?
Thanks.
Phil

The generator and/or the regular should be polarized, but it's not going to hurt anything on initial startup if not.

Charles, I am assuming that when it starts, all will then be polarized?

You'll need to follow polarizing instructions.  Just starting the engine will not polarize the charging system.

+1  Very easy process and should be followed anytime a charging component is replaced.  I likely still have my instructions if you can't find any on this. I'm sure the Ford shop manual has it...

I hope the rebuild on your generator is more successful than mine was last year.  Took 4 visits to the shop to get it right.  And this is a highly respected shop, and the guy that I talked to knew immediately what I was holding in my hands when I dropped it off.  Just some back luck for me at that point.

Hawkeye, actually I rebuilt it myself. I bought a new ford armature and bearings and took it to a shop and had them test it.  This car has not run since st least 1972 (inspection sticker) and only has 31,000 original mikes on it. Total rebuild and restoration.  The engine turned over today for the first time. The engine was seized when I bought it.  PROGRESS!  Hoot to fire it for first time next week.

Congrats.  Several people thought I was nuts to put the generator back on it, but at this point it felt like it was time to bring back that area of originality.

This is my first, and probably my only total restoration.  Always loved Mustangs, and I have a 69Mach 1 for 44 years.  The body is bone stock but have tweaked the 351 engine somewhat.  Doing the 64.5, was important to maintain everything stock, since I purchased it from the original owner with 32,000 original miles on it.  Tomorrow is engine fire up day.  First time since 1972 that this car will move under its own power, then off to the body shop.  This car maintains all original sheet Metal!
