64-1/2 Neutral Safety Switch Dash Harness Connections
« on: June 03, 2019, 08:06:59 PM »
I am replacing the dash wire harness on my 64.5 with 260 and cruise o matic.  The new harness with the round grommet at the firewall comes from the neutral safety switch on the trans and has a long two conductor harness under the dash with two black with red stripe wires with one female and one male connection.  These wires are three to four feet long.  I have no idea where these wires go.   There are also two short wires on the inside of the rectangular connector at the firewall, near the round one that also have two short wire, red with blue stripe, again with one male and one female connector.  I have no idea where these two wires go.  I have the Osborne electrical assembly book, but it does not seem to show these wires clearly.  The original harness looks somewhat different, and may have been made to accommodate through the 66 model year.  I have attached some photos of the original and replacement harness.

Just a guess but a possibility would be for back up lights than the car was not equipped with. The other two would be for the neutral safety interlock.

Bet Midlife will know.

I don't have a copy of the early wire loom and this may not be included since it may have only been made this way for a short period of time

Sorry not much help

I had thought about the back up light possibility, as the wire diagrams gives some reference to a connection near the fuse box, which would be where the bu light wire would probably terminate, and combined with the length, would make sense.  Thanks!

Get a copy of the 64 1/2 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual. It shows the backup light harness from the transmission, a second one under the dash to the fuse box and to the LH door jam, and a third harness that contains the extra wire for the backup lights from the front of the LH door jam to the rear valence. There is too much involved to be more specific.

Thanks, I have a copy of that manual.  I surmised that was the case, for the back up lights on a later model car.
