65 engine mount colors
« on: April 19, 2019, 02:21:47 PM »
I'm trying to do what I can on a budget using the MCA judging rules as a guide and some things aren't getting through to me.
On the engine mounts and brackets, for example. Are the mounts attached to the block before painting, and thus gloss black like the block (including the rubber and attaching bolts)? And, are the brackets attached to the frame and painted semi-gloss like the frame?

Most engines were built without a specific car application ("K" Mustang engines being one exception). Engine mounts were installed at all assembly plants as required so they did not get painted. Frame mounts were installed after the body and engine compartments were painted, again not painted - and that includs mounting hardware.
If you haven't got a set of Mustang Assembly Manuals for your car I recommend you do so.

Ask away and do your own research. If your just using those printed documents there will be many details not included

Some help - Aug 64 example but you didn't include when and where your car was built :(

Drivers side. Don't forget the heat shields ;)

Heat shields also plus the battery cable

Frame mount - unpainted

Hope this helps

Thanks again Jim and Jeff. I have a Mar 12, '64 170 and a Feb 27, '65 200, both Dearborn. Heat shields on an inline? One of the pics gave me a hint on the starter cable clamp also.
So, new engine mounts that come painted in black should be stripped to bare metal? My frame mounts already are, so they are ready to install. I'll look at the hardware spreadsheet in the library for the mounting hardware. Hopefully the AMK kit, 65Z-EMSX, that I ordered is correct.
I keep coming back here for clarification since there are so many conflicting, and incomplete, sources available. I do have the Jim Osborn assembly manuals that are applicable to my cars. The engine manual is V8 only so I haven't ordered it.

Guess its a bit dark in the picture of the early 6 cylinder picture labeled U1  in the Early 65 Dearborn U Code - Unrestored Picture Thread. No need for them since the engine's exhaust manifold isn't close at all unlike the V8

June 66 San Jose T Code Coupe - Unrestored Picture Thread shows a better look at the mount style, attachment and details

The examples I posted were painted black over the metal and rubber surfaces originally. Black paint is visible in at least one of the pictures of the drivers side mount above and on the passenger side in the picture below

An inline may have fewer details to cover but there is no doubt that there is a lot less information regarding restoring one.
I think that I am probably the only one that would tackle these two projects. Being a day-4 production car and a T-5 that actually made it to Germany, and considering that both are unmolested, unmodified, barebone cars keeps me motivated. I'll start stripping the paint from the engine mounts now that it has been clarified. Attention to detail is my strong point but I just have to know those details. As stated in this post, a lot of it is not in the manuals.
