Late 67 front bumper guards
« on: April 02, 2019, 11:07:50 PM »
Hi all, I am restoring a customers 67 coupe built August 11 1967 at the Metuchen plant. When it came to me, it was missing the front bumper guards.  Would anyone know if this last production day built car would have the guards with the rubber strip or without? I have both NOS but not sure which it would take. This is a strange car with a mix of 67 and 68 specific parts (quite a few) that I am going to restore correctly as it came but this one thing has me stumped. I am the first to disassemble the car but the guards were missing for some reason. All else was complete.  Thanks for any guidance!  Paul

I have had other late 67 cars that had the bumper guards that did not have the strips.

According to the 1960-68 MPC, the Front Bumper guards did not use the pads (rubber strips) "From 5/8/67" and forward. The rear bumper guards, however, retained the pads.

My late 67 also has no front bumper guards ... but I'm not suggesting it came that way.
I know what you mean about strange car ... mine came with a 68 rear view mirror, among other things.

Could you elaborate what 1968 parts are on the car?

Coralsnake, For starters all fender bolts and bolts to attach latch support etc (in fact most attaching bolts and hardware are 68 style markings). are all 68 style silver zinc style,  68 all plastic LH air vent cable, 68 style vinyl top drip rail stainless hold down strips (not riveted at the ends), rounded end headlight knob, glove box lock is the rounded style, LH door has flush mount inserts for door grille and RH door has the spacer type inserts (original doors), 3 yes only 3 tail light bezels had the black painted insert ( all on the RH side of car)and I was the first person to remove them. The biggest item is the body buck tag mounted on top of RH rear fender apron between hood hinge and fender states on the very bottom line of text " USE1968 COLOR U8" which of course is 68 Tahoe Turquoise. There are a few other 68 specific items and hardware that have slipped my mind but as I remember them I will post. It is the strangest car I have restored yet just because of the mix of parts. The car had a mask everything off paint job in the mid 80's in which nothing was removed and painted Vintage Burgandy. We have gone back to the original Tahoe Turquoise and it turned out spectacular. The owner is one of the higher ups at Intel and he wants as much NOS used as possible so it is being done nicely but will not be shown unfortunately. This car was built Friday August 11th 1967 and from what I read Monday August 14th was the first day of 1968 production. Hope this answers a little for you!  If you have any other questions about this car , PM me.    Paul

Too bad they will not be showing it. Do you have permission (or can you obtain permission) to share images of these anomalies?

Richard, I do have a few photos of some of the items before I disassembled the car that if I can figure out how to post pictures, I will. The car is now painted and going back together so some things I wont be able to prove with photos any longer. Should I start another post on these anomalies? I don't want to anger the moderators!   Paul

Perhaps yes, another thread but we would need to caution others somehow about it's "Last Day of Production" anomalies. I'm thinking perhaps in the Member's Build area of the forum. We wouldn't want readers randomly copying what is seen on a "close" date of say 2-weeks earlier even.
