65 Speedo Issues

Recently we got my father in-laws 65 GT HIPO running. After a couple of short drives the speedo began making a loud noise and did a full spin from 30ish back around to past 30 again and hung at 50 with the car off. Took the speedo out of the and reset the needle (it had jumped a metal tab or"stop") and it fell back to zero mph. It has continued making the noise at 30+ mph and floats up and down.  So we replaced the drive gear at the end of the cable, then the cable and the issue is still occurring. 

Does this issue sound more like an issue with the speedometer gauge itself or the speedo driver gear in the tail housing?

You will need to send the speedometer head to a Speedometer Service place.

Fortunately, unlike tachometers other vintage guages, there should be somebody close to you that still works on these old mechanical speedometer heads The design was very common on installation through many of the 80's vehicles.
A GOOGLE search should get you nearby results. I am sure there are places that specialize in old speedo's that people here have used and they likely will chime in but these units are not really rocket science either so no need to over-think it IMHO.

Another option would be to purchase another and simply replace if that is legal where your located.

Just an option though a rebuilt unit all fresh and ready to go would be nice

Hopefully we can get it repaired vs replacing since it is a 39k mile survivor.

Have you tried oiling the speedometer cable?  Sometimes some 3 in 1 oil or similar, applied at the cluster end of the cable, will help smooth things out.  The internal cable can be pulled out completely to clean/oil also.

There is a place on the needle that can be oiled with 3 in one if you didnt damage the spring when it stuck on you. I've done it before on heads that had been open to dirty air before and got them smoothed out. I don't remember what make or models I was able to do this on but just be carefull not to get oil on the face of the speedo.
