67 Shelby Trunk Lid color
« on: March 26, 2019, 03:56:01 AM »
Hi all, could you someone tell me if the underneath of a trunk lid color should be black or body color on a mid 500 '67 Shelby GT-500. The trunk lid has a metal frame on a fiberglass boot lid and it's painted blue and underneath the bonnet is painted satin black. Could some clarify this issue, please? Thanks.

Jeff showed pictures and answered that question here:

As noted in that thread I had a hybrid steel/glass trunklid on mine, as a replacement.
The underside of this trunklid was painted body color with no black anywhere to be found.
All fiberglass trunk lids are painted semi-black underneath as are all fiberglass hoods.

A factory installed 67 Shelby trunk lid with the steel inner structure would typically be painted body color on the bottom side. The all fiberglass trunk lids were blacked and sometimes left bare fiberglass from the supplier MFG on the bottom side before the top side was painted and being installed at the factory .  With that said the trunk lid's with the steel innerstructure were only used on the earlier produced cars. A mid 500's Shelby VIN would have been built well before the steel innerstructure trunk lids were being phased out.

In addition to this post for clarity -the all fiberglass versions of the hood and trunklids would be installed with ether a blacked out bottom side or in some cases just the bare fiberglass on the bottom side which had a somewhat dark appearance. Evidence indicates that in the case of the all fiberglass versions that the blackout was done or left bare from the MFG. Shelby just painted the top side and put them on the cars.
