67 Small Block Dist Primary Wire?

NOTE: These first few posts were separated from another thread in the wanted section of the site so that the discussion could continue away from that effort

This thread is confusing.

I was researching the correct end for my 67 Hi-Po and Mannel states 65/66 cars used an eyelet on the distributor primary wire that could fit through the small hole in the distributor. This small hole eyelet primary wire continued on in 67 on Hi-Po 'FoMoCo' cast  distributors (although the later Hi-Po Autolite distributors and service replacements went big hole).

However, in 67 all vacuum advance distributors went big hole due to the primary distributor wire's 90 degree molded end.

In ChrisV289's picture he shows an eyelet and a yellow 90 degree connector on a 65/66 car's coil.

I think this means the yellow connector is going to a 67-up distributor on Chris' car and that the normal nut screw down for a 65/66 distributor primary lead is instead the ignition power on this car.

Do I have this right?

Good question. Chris sent me some closer pics today of the wire as it passes through the distributor housing.

Took some pictures of the distributor and as suspected it is not the original one for this car.

Right, it had to be 67 or later to have a hole big enough for the yellow connector. Or someone made the hole in the distributor bigger with a drill.

Just for kicks, can you measure the length of the wire? From where it contacts the distributor body to the beginning of the yellow connector?

Sorry Bill don't have any 67 Hipo dist to measure or to offer for comparison.

Did go through my picture collection and none of the period magazine or factory pictures of that area are clear enough to offer any clues IMHO so checked out the cars and found than none of the unrestored cars pictures I have of 67 Hipo engines showed a angled molded boot but instead the eyelet earlier (65-66) style. Below is one of the best preserved GT350's I've seen for your review. It was built well after your car was for reference

I had asked Chris to measure his yellow 90 degree distributor primary wire only to determine the lengths of the various years. And, as we know, if the distributor had a molded end it could not be a stock 65/6 distributor.

I agree that all of the "FoMoCo" cast Hi-Po distributors were small hole and had the eyelet. I pulled out a variety of distributors which still had an original "appearing" primary wire with results below:

Correct. The above are vacuum advance standard distributors.

When I originally started this I had pics of all these. But that got too unwieldy.
I left off the pics which plainly showed FoMoCo/Autolite/Motorcraft logos.

I'm sorry to have muddied it myself by leaving the pics out.

In looking for something else today, I ran across the attached in the February 1967 Ford Shop Tips. While it doesn't address colors of the 90° connectors, it does say that all 1967 connectors to the Coil are of the 90° push on type.

Bill : While the Shop Tip does not say as such, you are of course correct. I should have added that note. I may work something up to clarify that, and go back and modify my Post.
