WANTED: WITTEK #9 Clamps ~Thermactor Hose Clamps for 67's
« on: March 27, 2019, 06:15:47 AM »
I discovered I am short one clamp and I have a broken one so I need two #9 size clamps.

Maybe I am wrong about their value but eBay prices seem a bit high to me so I am hoping that somebody has a small hoard of these clamps (someone whom I have also helped out on their project),  who doesn't need to add to their retirement off of selling a couple of these. Don't get me wrong, I'll buy them, I'm not at all looking for a free ride.

How much do they go for on ebay that seem a bit high? I have not done any research ebay.

Many are $40 each. I found a blasted one for about 15 and that seems about what I would expect to see with shipping.

Do you really know what you want? Got a Ford part number? There may be more than one finish.

I do not have the numbers from your spreadsheet in front of me  tonight. I will get them tomorrow. I know of them as what I called them, Wittek #9's. The car uses 6 of them and two Witteks #10's and the originals had traces of zinc dichromate under the nuts of the straps.

Yes, those #9's and 10's are typically zinc dichromate. They are used on various smog systems including CJ and maybe Boss (not sure on that) . Supply and demand is what runs up the price no doubt. If you can't find enough for a whole set let me know.

Thanks guys.

FWIW, (on another note)The large strap clamp around the filter canister onmy example, has a beautiful coating of zinc dichromate remaining on the inside surfaces, I believe this detail has been discussed in other threads also.

My inventory sheet says the 97245-S35 (Wittek #9) requires 6 for my application I have 5 of them with one damaged strap.. When I look at the codes for S35 in AMK book, it isn't there. I looked for the Legend to your spreadsheet but only found the list of Abbreviations with the time I had available to look for it yesterday. I do see remaining traces of the original finishes on my original clamps (see attached image, look close at the 97245-S35 clamp to see the traces) that suggest mine were all zinc dichromate. This same finish appears on all of the other band type Smog Hose Clamps 97244-S35 [WITTEK #10] & 97289-S(35) [WITTEK #88].

FWIW, I notice the Assembly Manual did not note the exact finish on 97289 since they left the finish code off, I also see in the spreadsheet you put the "(35)" (in parenthesis). I have attached a photo of the inside of the 97289-S(35) [WITTEK #88] clamp to confirm what I see on one of my 97245-S3567 clamps (where the nut resides). I would say the finishes all match on all 3 of these WITTEK clamps I have used within this reply. THIS is what I know I wanted two of.

My inventory sheet says the 97245-S35 (Wittek #9) requires 6 for my application I have 5 of them with one damaged strap.
My notes are as follows:
97240-S(x), 13/16 grip, Witek no 5 - verified
97241-S(x), 7/8 grip, Witek no 6 - assumed
97242-S(x), 15/16 grip, Witek no 7 - verified
97243-S(x), 1.0 grip, Witek no 8 - assumed, not used on Mustang
97244-S(x), 1 1/16 grip, Witek no 9 - assumed
97245-S(x), 1 1/8 grip, Witek no 10 - assumed
When I look at the codes for S35 in AMK book, it isn't there.
I use the "AMK Guide To Ford Fasteners, 1955-73" as a source. It say -S35 is a dull yellow zinc finish.
I notice the Assembly Manual did not note the exact finish on 97289 since they left the finish code off, I also see in the spreadsheet you put the "(35)" (in parenthesis).
I found no direct finish information so I put the -S35 code in parenthesis as a flag that it is assumed, and not verified.
It looks like all the 67 V8 engines use a -S35, dull gold zinc, finish. There is no disagreement there.
What I would like is your source for Witek side code to Ford part number.
Note: The 67 Engine Assembly Manual shows a -S8, clear zinc, finish used on 67 I6 engines.

"Personal" Deductive Reasoning using quantity on hand (removed from my project) and Ford part number references found in the 67 Engine Assembly Manual. I figured I have 5 out of 6 shown as needed on my 289, so deduced them to be the Wittek #9. I have two marked Wittek #10 (out of 2-needed on my 289).

Which is what I did. I've spent the last hour surfing the net for some sort of a Witek catalog showing "size" to "ID number" for "tangential" screw type clamps. There ain't one. That is what is needed.
There is the possibility that size 9 and size 10 Witek clamps may have been used interchangeable by Ford for this application, smog plumbing.
