Hey guys, whats everyone using as a gas tank for a 64 1/2 concours restoration? any particular brand gas tank? with drain plug or with out?

I've seen early 65 cars without drain plug and mid 65 onwards with drain plugs ? Many pics online show without a plug could that be depending on what plant they were made in ?

no. not plant dependent. all had the drain plug.

That is one of the challenges for builders. You can find a picture online or a car at a show with about anything and with the claims that it and all its details are original and correct. Does not make it so. Unlike someone who wants to sell their parts or show off their car we have no vested interest other than to try and provide the best, correct information.

To that end if you look at the first test body used to set up (run through the process) the line at what we believe was San Jose you will see a drain in thatg gas tank. Hard to get an earlier example than a car built earlier than the first production car there.

If you'll look through the Dearborn pictures. Pretty sure you will find the same

OK my Bad i was always under the impression early cars had no drain plug thanks for the info  guys

Depending on when your car was built the lower tank sides changed as well.  The earliest tanks had no reinforcing ribs on the sides, the second change introduced a single horizontal "rib" on each side.  Sometime early in "65" production the three vertical rib sides were introduced to cure the "oil canning" issue reported in the TSB's.
