Prepping Interior Panels for Paint
« on: January 31, 2019, 07:53:44 PM »
I am getting ready to paint the interior quarter panels and interior door surfaces of my 64.5. I recall a discussion before about prepping these panels with caution about the grain on these panels, but unable to locate it.  What is best way to preserve grain?Thnaks.

...........  What is best way to preserve grain?

- Remove all prior paint coats

- Don't sand, wire brush, get aggressive with the surface

Just one of the prior threads

Personally, I use paint stripper to remove all paint layers and contaminants. This can easily be done on a car that is currently being driven, using care not to get the stripper where you don't want it. After the stripper, I wash the panels with water to neutralize any remnant stripper, air dry or wipe dry, then start with basic metal prep prior to paint such as wax/grease remover, light scuff for adhesion, light coat of etching primer (if you chose to), followed by a top coat of paint/color. See my "Members build" link below for some pics of me doing this to the interior doors of my 66'. Hope this helps.
