Wood grain decal question.
« on: December 04, 2018, 11:30:27 AM »
  Good morning guys.
Just finished assembling the console for the 1966 convertible I'm working on. All the trim plates are new, and about to install the wood grain decals. Any tips or advice?
Also, I have seen pictures of the a/c unit with the wood grain face. Is this correct? No decals came in the kit for the a/c unit.
 Would appreciate any help.

   Thanks, Pete.

There should be an intermediate aluminum "plate" glued between the decals and the trim piece. The decals do not go directly on the trim. The glue does not appear to be epoxy based, but, based on the plates I've stripped, is more like weather strip adhesive.

Hmm.. the decals the owner supplied have no aluminum 'plate'. They are just a die cut vinyl. Will these work?

                 Thanks, Pete.

You can glue the decals down without the metal backings, but they may curl up over time and won't have the smooth appearance that the metal backing will provide.

Also, one note... some repro have a narrow sliver for the area on the shift plate.  This was never used on originals, the area was painted brown.

Thanks Charles. I see that NPD offers a metal backed decal kit. This may be the way to go.
Again, I'm just working with what the owner supplied.

Is this the kit you bought for the console?  - https://www.npdlink.com/product/woodgrain-kit-console-metal-backed-excellent-repro/184501/321?year=1966

I am very interested hearing how it turns out.  I will need to do the same thing at some point.

Does the glovebox and gauge cluster have this same metal backing for the woodgrain decals?
Thank you, Brian Littlefield

The kit that I have was supplied by the owner, and was not the metal backed, but rather just the die cut vinyl.
It did however include the instrument cluster, glove box door and the pony door handles along with the console pieces.
Sorry, but I can't help you with any details regarding the metal kit.

FYI... originally, the instrument cluster wood grain decal would not have been metal-backed.  The glove box door was though.

What about the face of the a/c unit. I saw a photo of a wood grain faced unit. Is that correct?

Wood grain never originally used on A/C face plates
