Remove Power Cylinder
« on: November 13, 2018, 12:37:57 PM »
What's the best way and tool to remove the power steering cylinder (slave) from the drag link (1965 Mustang)?  I need to rebuild it as it is leaking from the shaft end.  I tried the ball joint separator I've used before to remove it but there isn't enough space for it to grab on to.  Can't find anything on the web or a video showing it....

Best tool I've ever used for tie rods:

https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-3916D-Universal-Joint-Separator/dp/B003YVWHOE

Will not harm boots and can fit in pretty tight places.  It is bigger/beefier than it looks.  Harbor freight has similar but not the quality of this one and similar price.  Works like a lever pushing the ball stud out of the hole.  Usually tighten to moderate pressure then tap the link or spindle with a hammer will get it to pop.  Leave the nut partially threaded so things don't fly.

I tried that tool first and didn’t work. Wasn’t enough space for it to grab on to.

I have used this tool to remove the ram on my 67 and didn't have a problem. Don't quite get what you mean not enough space but if there isn't enough room you can try turning the steering wheel to the left which will move the drag link more to the right side of the car - think there is more room on that side.

I like and have used for years the smaller cast one piece (other than the screw part) version. Described as a press type linkage/stud separator

Handy tool

So finally got it disconnected from the drag link and cleaned it up as someone previously painted it black.  It is the original one as there is a date code of 4K7 on it.  I was able to get the c clip, copper scrapper thing, the little seal, white plastic piece and the two rubber seals out.  Now I'm trying to reassemble it and having a difficult time with the first seal.  It just doesn't want to get over that lip.  I try but then the little spring in the seal comes out and i have to start over.  Any suggestions on how to get these seals (there are 2) over this lip without tearing or having that spring come out?

Chris,
I had problems with mine too.
Are you using the Service Manual?
Try lubricating the seal with a dab of PS fluid. "Sometimes" that works.

I watched a guys video on you tube and he had issues as well but eventually it worked out for him. Ended up tearing one of the seals so I have another kit coming. I did soak them overnight in tranny fluid. I’ll check the service manual out.

The easiet way is to take the metal tube spacer that comes in the kit. It’s the spacer that goes on the threaded end for the bushings. Put some oil on the seal & slide it on the spacer so the lip goes on easily. Then put the spacer on the shaft turned over so the seal will be orientated the correct direction. Then slide the seal onto the shaft. I hope I have explained it so you understand. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks that worked like a charm. All rebuilt now 🙂
