Topic: 1967 Mustang Fastback Rear axle grinding noise when turning

Morning

Can anyone help took the fastback to a show yesterday, all good until I turned onto the show field and a grinding noise from the rear axle came through the car It seemed like the brakes at first but we checked them over with nothing to show as being a problem. We drive back mostly in straight line on the motorway but to home with no problems until we again turned in for gas and the grinding started again. Can anyone help out with the probable cause and maybe help with a solution please.
Conventional axle no. 1 and 3 speed manual transmission no. 1

If it helps she has been stood a good couple of months prior to yesterday

Fortunately with an "OPEN" rear end, things are easier and less expensive. One possibility is defects in the spider gears (rust or chunks missing for example) Some basics to study (look at image):
1)Axle Shaft.

2)Ring Gear.

3)Side (axle) Gears.

4)Spider Gears.

5)Housing.

6)Pinion Gear.

7)Pinion Shaft.

The pinion shaft is rotated by the Drive shaft (engine power).The Pinion gear rotates the ring gear .When the ring gear rotates ,both spider gears attached to the ring gear rotates.Spider gear rotates both wheels individually and freely. where the final power is transferred to shaft gears, which finally turn wheels.

Spider gears allow the "outside" wheel when turning in a radius, to travel further than the "inside" wheel. A "Locking" rear end uses other components (in place of the spider and side gears) to allow the difference in the distance a tire travels while in a turn.

If it is a Traction-Lok clutch pack type differential it can also be noisy clutches.   

You may just need to add a bottle of Friction Modifier to the lube.
