Topic: E-Brake handle question

Hi, I'm a long time lurker here, but as far as I can remember, this is my first post.  I have a question regarding the emergency brake handle on a 64.5 coupe.  The build date is approximately 4/14/64 (missing tag) and the VIN is 5F07D113769.  Like most of the handles from then, mine is nearly broken so I decided to replace it.  The replacement handle has the pin located at approximately the 3 O'clock position looking at the handle face while the original has the pin indexed around closer to the 8 O'clock position.  Is the simple fix just to re-drill the actuator rod or can I buy the correctly indexed handle somewhere?  Thanks for the help and all the previous information that has been made available here.

OK John I'll chime in here.  My car is a 65, San Jose and picked up from the dealer 5/29/65.  I replaced my handle some time back solely because the white was worn from the raised lettering.  It was, as I remember, a bit of a chore.  I kept the OE handle and the retaining pin is on the right at the 3:00 O' clock position.The replacement handle is a Scott Drake CODZ-2760-B and the pin location is on the opposite side or the 9:00 O'clock position.  The retaining pin location on the emergency brake shaft is a thru and thru so installing the new handle is easy enough.  I did not re-tap the Scott Drake handle just installed it.  Hope that's of some help.  Brian

The replacement handle that I purchased is like yours with opposite holes at 3 O'clock and 9 O'clock where as the old handle had just a single hole down about the 8 O'clock position.  It did not go all the way through.  If I use the new handle with the existing hole in the actuator shaft, the handle does not set level with the brake disengaged.

I have read up on this before and believe that no one today that makes the handle you are looking for. Even NOS ones I have seen usually have the hole at 3 o'clock. I believe you will have to redrill the shaft though it sounds tricky as the hole may end up close to the original hole. Is your original handle cracked. I had good luck with my 65 and 66 just polishing the plastic and repainting the letters.

I have noticed the difference in hand brake handles, but not paid close enough attention to know when they were changed from one to the other.  If I remember right, Ford also serviced them both ways.  This is most likely what caused the problem with the repro as a lot of repro parts are/were created using Ford service parts as the basis.

Anyone know if there is a repro still available in the 2 to 8 O'clock (diagonal) pin position. All the ones that I am coming across seem to be 3 to 9 O'clock (or horizontal)?
