Exterior Decor Group - 69 Conv
« on: May 12, 2019, 08:19:58 AM »
I'm not sure what exactly came with this group. I've read before that this group comes with rocker moldings, wheel opening moldings and trunk/quarter extension moldings. What confuses me is that I've seen several high dollar restorations where the trunk/quarter moldings are left off. Just the rocker and wheel opening moldings installed. I know that the rocker moldings were available alone but were the wheel opening moldings also available alone? Was the exterior decor group available without the rear moldings as some special order exception?

I'm going with 69 since his handle is ninedrvr.
Look under the additional better ideas options heading:

I'm interested mostly with the 1969 convertible. The brochure link lists the Exterior Decor Group as having "bright wheel opening moldings; rear deck moldings on Hardtop and Convertible; full wheel covers; rocker panel molding" The brochure also lists at the bottom of the option list "many more". I know that the rocker moldings were available separately as I've seen that listed on Marti reports / window stickers. The question is whether a car could be configured by the factory with the wheel opening and rocker moldings but without the rear deck moldings?

This car I've attached is equipped this way. I'm just curious whether someone added some of the moldings and omitted others or whether this car could have come out of the factory this way?

Could find anything that would support the wheel well lip molding being available separately, well other than the dealer or owner added

Don't even have a 69 Marti report for a car with the exterior decor group showing as an option

I have seen "trim variation" on some Marti / stickers. Just wondering if this is what is displayed on the report if there is some sort of customization of a feature or option. I saw an internal memo to dealers outlining the option of deleting the hood pins on customer ordered Mach 1s but never actually saw an example of this nor how it would show up on the sticker.

Kevin has changed how and what he reports over the decades and sometimes the terms he uses/used changed most likely due to experience and additional knowledge discovered over time.

Have seen some reports were owners, through the dealers were able to delete certain things that were part of a package but typically dealers would try and keep with the suggested combinations and factory specifications in most cases just to reduce the possibility of problems and the hassle.

We don't often also have copies of original window stickers to go with the factory records.

Allot of times oddities are a result of previous owners than something done at the factory from my experience

ninedrvr, does your convertible's Marti report include exterior decor group and trim variation, or just exterior decor group?
Is your convertible equipped with the wheel lip and rocker mouldings, but not the quarter cap and trunk mouldings?
No holes filled on your quarter panel extension caps?
The mouldings could have been omitted in a rear end collision repair with the substitution of non drilled caps and trunk.
Pull your quarter panel extension caps and look for different colored paint on the back side of them.
Check the date code stamped in your trunk lid too.

I don't know if this will help you, I got this 69 Grande invoice when I bought a nice owners manual off Ebay some years ago and it was folded inside.  Notice in the list of options what it lists for the Moldings.

Ive understood trim variation to mean the simulated wood grain color variations on some '69 Machs. I will have to go and check.

I thought that change over to walnut trim was handled with the addition of an "A" on the interior code. For my car it would be FW for a teak trim and FWA for a walnut trim.
