1965 BLUE convertible top?
« on: April 05, 2018, 06:29:45 PM »

I'm dead-ending on the research, so now I go to the pros....

My new to me Wimbledon white '65 convertible has a blue top....the interior seats and panels are white. The carpeting and dash are blue...

Is the blue top correct, and an original item? Maybe ordered this way?

Thanks in advance!

According to How To Restore Your Mustang, a blue top was available with wimbleton white paint but only through the 64.5 production (Aug. 17, 1964).  It could also be had with Caspian Blue and Silver Blue.  The White Vinyl with Blue Appointments in the Interior could only be had in the Caspian and Silver Blue colors.

True. The question is - is your "65" a "65" or a "64 1/2". A partial VIN would help, the first 7 characters specifically.

First few VIN #s : 5F08C8xxxxx

The door tag reads:

76A Convert
M White
D2 White with blue
30U 30 July
dso 81

That's the interesting bit....it went into the Canadian DSO.

Maybe that made the difference.

The Canadian DSO had nothing to do with it.

A Blue convertible top color option was indeed offered in 1964 1/2 Production, but I would not be surprised if it ran into early '65 Production as well.  The big question is when that cut-off was.

Your car, VIN# 5F08C8xxxxx is a very, very Late '65 Production....so I heavily doubt that it ever came with a Blue Top since new.  Chances are that the car never came originally with a Blue convertible top since it's such a late '65 build.  It most likely had a White convertible top when new judging by your interior code color.  I don't think that even Ford would have put a Black convertible top on a White with Blue interior. It just does not make sense.  Stranger things have happened though..

(See Attached Pic) - Attached is a Factory 1964 1/2 Mustang Specs Chart.  If you look at the Middle Box in the left column where it says "Convertible", You will see "Blue" listed as a convertible top color choice.

very interesting sheet Tony.

p.s. I did not know that the 3 speed manual was not available with the D-Code 289 4V.

I should go on to say that we know the above 1965 Specs Sheet (Page 3) is from 1964 1/2 Production from the date printed at the lower right hand corner of the page, It says: "February 3rd, 1964".....2 months prior to April 17th, 1964...The Mustang's "Official" release at the NY World's Fair.   Also, I don't think that I have the other attaching pages 1-2 and so forth.. I'll have to do a search and check my files.. If I find them, I will post them.

PS: I don't think that DOT logo from your Blue Convertible Top is from the Original installed top to your car.  I don't recognize the vendor, and the bottom of your rear vinyl windscreen label is obscured, See if you can take a better picture of it for us.. May I suggest raising the top and then taking a pic of it.  I think that big "86" on it might be the date..."1986"...or 8/66, but that would not make sense unless the original top was damaged and replaced really early.  I really won't know until I see the entire label...but I'm betting 1986.  I'm not completely ruling it out yet..  See the (5) attached pics below that are from Original cars.

Hey, By some luck, I found pages 1 and 2!...and Page 3 again...  Apparently, It came out of Ford's Buffalo Office to Dealers (East Coast Dealers most likely). Here they are...See Attached:
